Rare Wilhelm Knoll Lounge Chairs in Bouclé, Germany 1970s (sold)

$0.00

This pleasantly peculiar pair of lounge chairs by the famous manufactory, Wilhelm Knoll, is a stunning reminder that German design played an important role in the history of furniture design. From the Thonet chair to the Bauhaus, post-war German design history is rich in outstanding pieces, like these lounge chairs.

These chairs are a mix between a club and a tub chair shape wise, with a wide, welcoming profile. The wide armrests blend into the bodies and form a shell with lines that curve outwards, resembling a blooming flower. This resemblance is further enhanced by the front, where the armrests appear to open even more. The thick back and seat cushions add to the inviting look, while also providing great sitting comfort. The straps that form the base of the seats are quite special. These specific straps were designed, and exclusively produced by Wilhelm Knoll, the company that introduced the first club armchair to Germany among other notable achievements. The seats and bodies are supported by expertly crafted wooden frames, with tapered legs that are tilted outwards. The stylish light and dark bouclé fabric has an intriguing texture that complements the shape of these lounge chairs. Both from afar and close up, the upholstery is one of a kind.

Wilhelm Knoll, the founder of the Knoll dynasty, opened the doors of his “leather shop” in Stuttgart, Germany in 1865. “Knoll leather” became the hallmark of quality, and the House of Württemberg named Wilhelm Knoll “supplier to the royal court“. In 1907, Wilhelm’s sons Willy and Walter took over their father’s business and started producing seating. The company created many now iconic models, and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2015.
