Scandinavian Mahogany Armchair in Sheepskin, Scandinavia ca 1950s (sold)
“Scandinavian Mid-Century Modern” is a recognized term around the world, standing for the characteristic style of Scandinavian design created during the mid-20th century. As this armchair shows, furniture created in this period is characterized by clarity in design and extremely high-quality craftsmanship and choice of materials.
The elegant organic lines of the design create a striking silhouette. Its generous proportions and luxurious upholstery provide great sitting comfort. The chair’s seat and backrest are tied together by the sheepskin upholstery, from which the sculpted mahogany arms emerge. This stylish feature highlights the beautiful wooden frame and its warm colour. The armrests run down to the very end of the seat, and are sculpted to perfection to accommodate the sitter. The short wooden legs are higher in the front to raise the seat, providing additional sitting comfort, while also keeping the cosy look of the design. The true defining element of this armchair however, is the upholstery. The soft and warm sheepskin highlights the winged back and the voluptuous seat cushion, and contrasts the smooth surface of the mahogany by hugging the wooden armrests.
Scandinavian Modern furniture reflected Scandinavian materials and craftsmanship and mixed them with a modern style. This is reflected in the beautiful sheepskin upholstery, which give this easy chair a soft, modern edge. The sturdy frame and armrests are all carved from solid oak and have acquired a beautiful patina over the decades.
