Arne Norell "Thumb" Chair for Gösta Westerberg, Sweden 1952 (sold)

Arne Norell "Thumb" Chair for Gösta Westerberg, Sweden 1952 (sold)

$0.00

This "Thumb" Chair is one of the most recognisable designs of the Swedish designer, Arne Norell.

The thumb-shaped backrest immediately stands out, giving the chair its distinctive shape and name. The one-of-a-kind curved back, decorated with ten tufted buttons, rests on four beech wooden legs. The back legs are slightly tilted, while the front ones stand straight, enhancing the distinctiveness of the design.

As it can be expected from Scandinavian design, functionality and comfort do not fall short. The curved back with the extended “thumb” ensures great comfort, while the upholstered cushion adds to the overall sitting comfort. The chair has been reupholstered in a premium bouclé fabric.

About the designer:

Arne Norell (1917 - 1971) started his practice in 1954 with just two employees. In a small workshop in Sundbyberg the versatile designer made the first steps to what would become one of Sweden’s leading manufacturers of seating furniture. Until this day the business is still family owned, and the family continues to produce a selection of the large oeuvre drawn by Arne Norell. ~H.

Exhibitions:

Presented at the "Önskehemsutställningen" in 1952.
