Danish Cabinetmaker Oak Easy Chair, Denmark 1940s (sold)

Danish Cabinetmaker Oak Easy Chair, Denmark 1940s (sold)

$0.00

The 1940s saw brilliant designers working to create furniture of the highest quality that explored truly modern shapes and forms. These designers experimented with new materials and construction methods but, crucially, they all had a formal training, either as architects or as furniture makers. This sculptural easy chair shows how successful these experiments were.

This easy chair has a lovely and stylish pairing of materials that makes it one of a kind. The warm coloured oak body resembles a vintage Scandinavian sledge with its curved armrests and seat. These curves define the look and frame the upholstered body both in a figurative and literal way. The back curves into the seat in one, uninterrupted line, similarly, the armrests flow into the back legs creating the sense of motion. These flowing lines are contrasted by the straight stretchers between the front and back legs, and a third one connecting these horizontally. This medley of shapes and lines is exceptional and testifies of expert woodworking skills. The soft wool upholstery stands out on its own, but the dark oak structure highlights it even more, adding a touch of luxury and modernism to the chair.

This easy chair preserves the value and beauty of master craftsmanship and exquisite materials. Danish cabinetmakers were and are still world-renowned for their unmatched skill that distinguishes mid-century cabinetmaker furniture.
