Danish mid-century design is known for clean and pure lines that coupled craftsmanship with delicate research into proportions, materials and the requirements of the human body, adapting design to modern-day needs. This wingback chair is a prime and exquisite example of this development, with characteristics that are unmistakeably Danish.

Wingback chairs are upholstered accent chairs with “wings” attached to the seatback. Like most traditional wingback chairs, this Danish model features a high back that connects all the way down to the armrests in one continuous piece. Originally, the style was created as a way to help shield a person from drafts of cold air and also to trap the heat from a fireplace. That is why wingback chairs are sometimes called fireside chairs, as it was a popular style of chair to have pulled up in front of or flanking a fireplace. This chair additionally has the touches of mid-century modernism, with soft, cosy upholstery decorated with button tufting, and rounded edges that enhance both the visual and physical cosiness. The slender, stained beech legs prevent the chair from looking heavy, while their warm brown colour nicely contrasts the soft, light colour of the body.

True to Danish ideals, the designer of this model rejected the pseudo- historical use of ornamentation, instead favouring a pared-down and uncluttered look. Danish design allowed aesthetics to flow more naturally, which is clearly visible in the lines of this chair, from its embracing back to its voluptuous armrests.
