Easy Chair in Mongolian Shearling, Europe ca 1950s (sold)

$0.00

As this easy chair showcases, European furniture designers of the 20th century often used a contemporary touch that was based on the unmistakable functionality of the pieces they created. They then applied artistic touches - such as the sculpted edges and the upholstery - that complemented the pieces’ functionality and elevated its aesthetic dimension.

The distinctive structure of this chair is composed of teak wood veneer with a beautiful colour that has versatile patterns all across the body. It is greatly enhanced on the unique form with the defining curve of the half circle shaped back. The flamboyant look however, is the result of the brilliant pairing of materials. The structure’s defined lines stand out even under the highly textural shearling while also accentuating the individuality of the upholstery. The soft fibres of the lightweight, curly Mongolian shearling drape beautifully over the structure, while the warm greyish colour adds a lot of depth. As opposed to traditional shearling, Mongolian lamb/shearling (also known as shag) is a long, flouncy fur celebrated for its softness and luxurious volume. The overflowing curls of the material in the back create a stunning effect, making this chair attractive from all possible angles. The pair of legs differ, as the front ones are larger, while the back ones are gently splayed for stability. Thanks to its visual qualities, mainly the shearling’s lush texture and colour, this infinitely cosy chair can also be used as an accent piece to break the mostly straight lines of any minimalistic space.

This stunning chair revolves around high-quality materials, comfort, and the mastery of the era’s European cabinetmakers. The design is focused on the aesthetics of modernism whilst employing the exquisite qualities of its upholstery. In many ways this chair transcends the word ‘modern’ thanks to its unique look.
