The 1950s saw brilliant designers working to create furniture of the highest quality that explored truly modern shapes and forms. These designers experimented with new materials and construction methods but, crucially, they all had a formal training, either as architects or as furniture makers. This pair of sculptural lounge chairs show how successful these experiments were.

This pair of lounge chairs has an essentially simple, almost constructionist structure that assumes great knowledge of architecture on the designer’s part. The outlines are mostly straight with curved details, bringing the chairs into a dynamic balance. Additionally, the design has many interesting details, such as the “ears” on top and the ribbed backs and the raised low seats. The lines are crisp and elegant, aiding the stability, comfort and ergonomic design of this pair. The ribbed backs allow the design to remain airy and lets the cushions be visible from every angle. The seamless mortise and tenon joinery and the precise wooden structures are further evidences of the mastery of the cabinetmaker. The upholstery of the removable seat and back cushions is a stylish feature; the cowhide is very textural, and stands out against the smoothness of the wood. The use of cowhide is usually reserved for occasional chairs or accent chairs as they raise the aesthetic level significantly as it is seen here.

Dating from this period of unbridled creation, this exceptional pair of wood lounge chairs preserves the traditional ideals of European mid-century design, while also utilizing the new techniques the 1950s brought by. While the 1960s saw the takeover of mass production and many - now iconic - futuristic designs, these chairs preserve the value and beauty of master craftsmanship and exquisite materials.
