Scandinavian Modern Upholstered Armchair, Scandinavia 1950s (sold)
Scandinavian Modern Upholstered Armchair, Scandinavia 1950s (sold)
This rare low back rocking chair is generally attributed to the Danish master of characteristic, baroque-like Danish modernist design, Henning Kjærnulf. This rocking chair mixes the aesthetic traditions of the baroque era with streamlined mid-century modernism with a result that is timeless.
Materials were critical to mid-century design and wood was by no means the only material present in the creation of mid-century modern pieces. Wood was often used in tension with other materials to create a unique look. Here the exotic wood frame is crafted into curved shapes that is most apparent in the flowing armrests. The geometric shapes feel angular and clean, but not too strict. There is an inherent cosiness to this armchair that is the result of the soft edges and the upholstered seat and back. A key tenant of the mid-century modern style is functionality, therefore much attention was paid to the ergonomics: the back is gently reclined, while the thick, loose seat cushion provides lots of comfort. The cushion also compensates the short legs that keep the design grounded. Besides functionality, attention to detail was just as important for Scandinavian designers of the era as the quality of their work. Furniture had to offer something from every angle, just like this armchair: its slat back shows off the bouclé back cushion’s highly textural fabric. The cushion is button tufted on both sides for this very reason. From the sides the arm supports become visible as they sink into the seat. Finally, the front view shows off the sculpted front legs and how perfectly the cushions are fitted to the frame.
The mid-century style is always on-trend. And it’s no surprise, because the furniture from this period - exemplified by this armchair - combines functionality, pragmatism, and an appeal to the senses. It continues to inspire and enthral the interiors industry, so much so that designers are constantly reinterpreting the movement.
