Solid Wood Wabi-Sabi Stool with Tripod Legs, Europe mid-20th century (sold)
Solid Wood Wabi-Sabi Stool with Tripod Legs, Europe mid-20th century (sold)
Wabi-sabi is an ancient Japanese philosophy that denotes a more connected way of living—a lifestyle, where we are deeply connected to nature, and thus, better connected to our truest inner-selves. In design this translates to raw surfaces, no overworked elements and organic materials. In short, the beauty of each piece is in its imperfections.
Wabi is about recognizing beauty in humble simplicity, while Sabi is concerned with the passage of time, the way all things grow, age, and how it manifests itself beautifully in objects. It then comes naturally, that most furniture pieces carrying this style - like this stool - are made of wood. Here, the solid wood is evidently in the focus with all its natural qualities that only got enhanced with time. The seat has a rectangular shape to accommodate the sitter, which is supported by three legs that widen towards the end. The construction is reminiscent of French milking stools, utilizing wedged mortise and tenon joinery. The tripod legs are splayed for additional stability, while the seat has an ergonomic shape where it deepens towards the centre. This stool entirely focuses on its solid wood material and well-crafted, but simple lines. The visible cracks and imperfections on both the legs and the seat only enhance the aesthetic quality in a true wabi-sabi manner.
There’s a plethora of wisdom embedded within the very fabric of this age-old philosophy that takes form in this stool. In contemporary spaces, the stool is the perfect furniture type to introduce organicity to an interior. Despite its humble size, this stool is sure to stand out for all the right reasons.
