Swedish Modern Armchair, Sweden ca 1940s (sold)
This beautiful Swedish armchair is an early example of Nordic mid-century modern design as well as outstanding craftsmanship with a quality that honours the materials and their users.
The main principles of Swedish Modernism center around minimalism, simplicity and functionalism. This armchair achieves to follow these principles while offering plenty of visually arresting qualities, which include the curved armrests covered in upholstery, the tufted backseat adorned with buttons and the decorative carvings on the sides. The clean lines of the armchair let the original upholstery and the elm veneered armrests stand out, both in which the expert Swedish craftsmanship is clearly visible. The soft upholstery and the voluptuous, loose seat cushion guarantee comfort. The mix of the bold, yet restrained colours and the smooth edges and lines of the wood was used to create an elegant, arresting piece.
Nordic textiles are beloved, people around the globe are fascinated by the eccentric and classic designs. However, it is rare to find an armchair with its original, stunning Nordic upholstery, which is why this armchair is an exceptional find. ~H.
