"Grand Repos" Sofa by Guillerme et Chambron for Votre Maison, France 1950s (sold)
This oaken “Grand Repos” sofa deserves its title of iconic, both in terms of quality and design. This model visually represents the very reason Votre Maison, the French duo Guillerme et Chambron’s company, significantly influenced French design history.
Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron are known for their high-quality, solid oak furniture, and the “Grand Repos” models are the most distinctive thanks to their spindle backrests. With a solid wooden frame, the support for the back consists of eleven symmetrically arranged wooden spindles extending upwards. The backrest is slightly tilted for comfort, aided by the generous seat and back cushions. This two-seater sofa’s back cushion is adorned with tufted buttons that add depth to the purple upholstery. The creative overarching spindles create an almost throne-like, grandiose effect. The curvature of the arms follows the lines of the back, and gently curve outwards. “Grand Repos” stands for “great rest” in French, and with a well-though out, elegant design this sofa is sure to provide exactly that.
The regal purple colour of the upholstery of the seat and back cushions beautifully complements the light oak frame. The back cushions are secured with loops that envelop the back spindles, ensuring that the cushion stays in position. The bottom consists of two cushions framed by the curved wooden armrests, which extend out to the front legs. The woodworking truly shows the overall quality of this sofa: the frame is refined and the attention to the smallest detail shows the design and manufacturing skills of Guillerme et Chambron.

In the 1970s, the power of television sparked a profound shift in households and a sofa became a "must-have". Sofas became the core of the "Les Contemporains" collection at French retailer, Roche Bobois, with this rare model in their famed repertoire.
This stunning three-seater sofa stands on a plinth in polished stainless steel. This design feature immediately sets the modern edge of this model, making the contrast of its materials’ texture, colour, and look the main design element. The seat and back form a permanently reclined angle, with six individual cushions comprising the seat and back. The brown suede fabric covers the cushions with deep stitches enhancing the fabric’s luxurious qualities. The contrast between the brushed steel and suede is stark, which creates tension. Still, the sofa is in perfect visual balance thanks to the carefully measured proportions. In the absence of arms, the design remains very open and light despite the characteristic materials. The design is commonly attributed to Jacques Charpentier, who was a French decorator and editor. He studied at the Boulle School and graduated in 1945 after which he began his career by opening a workshop in Paris, where from the 1960s, he designed stainless steel sofas. By the end of 1970, his company had nearly sixty employees.
This Roche Bobois edition sofa model has a unique upholstery with patinated suede in a rich brown colour that lends a stylish, modern look that is reminiscent of the 1970s. In combination with the steel base, this model commands the space it is placed in, and is sure to draw attention.

The duo of Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron and their company, Votre Maison denote a landmark of French mid-century design history. This brilliant corner sofa with faïence designed by world-renowned ceramist Boleslaw Danikowski, is a piece that represents the very reason Votre Maison, the French duo’s company became a reference point in 20th century French design.
The legendary French design duo, Guillerme and Chambron, placed equal emphasis on function and aesthetics, creating an aesthetic as staid as it was - and continues to be - arresting. From every angle, this sofa’s design has unique solutions that are unmistakeable both in form and in medium. As this sofa shows, the duo’s pieces also possess an unusual flare. In this case, the brightly coloured faïence corner table is the outstanding element of the design. The tiles are framed by the light oak and serve both an aesthetic and a functional role. The duo’s wood of choice, waxed oak, was often lightened to a lighter tone to showcase the sculptural details. Such a detail are the curving seats and the joinery, that show expert craftsmanship and creativity. The unusual seats resemble a slatted bench, while the armrests and legs are sculpted with the level of precision that is expected from Votre Maison. The tiled corner segment adds a lot of openness to the design, preventing it from looking heavy. The curving shape and thick, comfortable seat and back cushions provide plenty of comfort, therefore this settee is perfect for cosy lounging and conversing.
This corner sofa is one of the most stunning examples of the success of Guillerme et Chambron’s design experiments. The thinly glazed ceramic tiles of Danikowski, or faïences, are artistic, with interesting nonfigurative patterns in various hues of blue. The vivid colours stand out greatly against the light upholstery and oak body that has aged beautifully and displays a stunning grain within the wood.

Robert Guillerme graduated in 1934 from the École Boulle where he excelled in architecture and furniture design. After the Second World War he moved to Lille, in the north of France, where he decorated homes and designed furniture for the well regarded Rogier workshops.
In 1948, Guillerme was joined by his long-time friend, decorator Jacques Chambron in Lille. The following year Guillerme and Chambron met master cabinetmaker Émile Dariosecq, owner of a woodworking shop and the company Votre Maison was born. Together, they defined and imposed a new furniture concept. Thanks to their distinctive creativity, originality, and quality, the Votre Maison quickly became well-known.
The Votre Maison marked the history of French design. Guillerme drew the furniture designs while Chambron played the part of salesman, welcoming and advising clients. The power duo was complemented by Dariosecq, whose workshop took charge of the manufacturing. Together, they defined new furnishings concepts. Well-crafted chair back, polished wood and thick cushions make the reputation of their armchairs and sofas. Votre Maison continued to produce furniture right into the 20th century, with Jacques’s son Hervé Chambron, a designer and graduate of the École Boulle, having taken the over in 1983. ~H.

This rare oak settee is a delightful piece even if measured against the other seating models in the repertoire of the French designer duo, Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron. This model truly deserves adjectives such as unique or even iconic, both in terms of quality and design. It visually represents the very reason Votre Maison, the French duo’s company significantly influenced French design history.
From every angle, this settee’s design has unique solutions that are unmistakable. Starting with the duo’s trademark oak frame to the sculptural legs and backrests, while also featuring details that are one-of-a-kind. Such a detail is the curving seat and its joinery, that shows expert craftsmanship and creativity. The curve also serves as a table, adding much functionality and practicality to the sculptural look. The unusual seat resembles a slatted bench, while the two, individual backrests break the flat surfaces and emerge like thrones. The spindles enhance this appearance, especially with the longer, middle spindles that also serve as back legs. The armrests and legs are sculpted with precision to serve a double purpose: an aesthetic role, and a functional one. The corner segment adds a lot of openness to the design, preventing it from looking heavy. The curving shape and thick, comfortable seat and back cushions provide plenty of comfort, therefore this settee is perfect for cosy lounging.
Guillerme et Chambron’s work at Votre Maison not only represents the fusion of function and form, but also exemplifies the mid-century modern aesthetic - which they played a pivotal role in shaping. Their emphasis on quality craftsmanship and the use of noble materials like oak has undeniably left a lasting imprint in the world of furniture design, solidifying their legacy in the French design landscape during the mid-century era. Together, they defined new furnishings concepts. As this brilliant settee shows, well-crafted structures, polished wood and thick cushions created the now world-famous reputation of their seating designs.
