Italian Mid-Century Modern Armchairs, Italy 1950s (sold)

Italian Mid-Century Modern Armchairs, Italy 1950s (sold)

$0.00

Though most mid-century Italian designers may not have the same name recognition as some of their Scandinavian and American counterparts in the mass market, they were integral in developing a modern aesthetic in Europe.

The design of this pair is focused on elegant and measured proportions, balanced compositions, and refined décor elements including the exclusive materials. The straight lines of the spindle backs and the curving form of the armrests exemplify this balance. The pairing of the beautiful wooden frames with the upholstered seat and back cushions show off both materials’ elegance. This pair of armchairs is aesthetically linked to Italian design icon, Paolo Buffa. This is because his design language was always coherent with current times and congenial to the wisdom of furniture manufacturing, representing an outpost of strong innovation in the panorama of Italian craftsmanship, characteristics that define these chairs as well. Like their international contemporaries, Italian designers prized the marriage of form and function, but there are a few key differences that set Italian mid-century design apart. Whereas in the United States, modernism was linked to the need to democratize good design for the middle class, in Italy good design was generally being produced by and for the upper class. Italian Modern furniture is defined by unique design, perfect execution, and exclusivity.

The versatile shapes, from the flowing, carved armrests to the spindle backs and tapered legs, make these chairs stand out. Italy boasts the most architecture students per capita of any country in the world and this pair shows why young designers still look to the mid-century masters for inspiration.
