Model "ER 180" Acrylic Glass and Copper Ceiling Light by Itsu, Finland 1960s (sold)

Model "ER 180" Acrylic Glass and Copper Ceiling Light by Itsu, Finland 1960s (sold)

$0.00

This modern ceiling light was designed during an era in which Finland saw the birth of many of its most iconic lighting models. It was a period of consistency, excellence, and sophistication design wise. As such, this “ER 180” fixture is sure to add a fantastic layer of lighting to any ambiance, elevating the lighting design and décor of any space, while also providing effective illumination in terms of ambient or accent lighting.

‎‎Despite being responsible for some of the most distinctly stylish lamps of the 20th century, Itsu is one of the lesser known gems of Finland’s lighting manufacturers. Itsu is short for Itä-Suomen Sähkö (Eastern Finland Electricity) founded in 1945 and was most active during the mid-century era producing characteristic models in small quantities. This ceiling light first appeared in Itsu’s 1965 catalogue, and remains a rarity. As a semi flush mount, the acrylic reflector is fitted to the ceiling via a thick rod. This leaves a gap between the fixing plate and the light source, allowing for the light to hit the ceiling, offering lighting a neat effect from the pendant itself, while also providing downward light to illuminate the room. The acrylic lampshade has a bowl shape with copper accents at the bottom and at the top. Acrylic lamps offer several advantages over traditional lamps made from glass or metal, the primary benefit of acrylic lamps being their durability. Furthermore, the lamp holder’s beautiful patinated copper surface hides a white lacquered inside that reflects the light beautifully. The manufacturer’s mark can still be found on the lamp.

By the 1950s, Finland had established itself as a force for innovation in design. The best qualities of Finnish light fixtures’ are their atmospheric light and disciplined, functionalist design with subtle decorative elements. This rare semi flush mount lamp is a great example of Finnish excellence, ideal to bring modernism into any space.
