This special cabinet was created by Vingåkers Möbelfabrik in Sweden during the end of an era that is today known as Swedish Grace. The style is elegant and refined, yet delightfully simple at its core. As this cabinet showcases, it generally features more decoration than one would expect from Scandinavian design.

There are two main decorative elements on this cabinet, one being the beautifully sculpted scroll legs with low stretchers, and the other, more obvious one being the marquetry inlay on the doors of the cabinet. Mjölby Decouperfabrik was established in Sweden in 1909, the name evolving to Mjölby Intarsia in 1917. During the inter-war period the company reached its greatest heights employing an in-house skilled workforce delivering consistently high quality inlaid pieces to all of Scandinavia. The choice of motifs for the inlays, as seen here as well, was characterized by ancient mythology, Christian pictorial tradition and genres of a southern/Mediterranean character. The inlaid sections of wood within the solid wood matrix of the doors include walnut, birch, elm, and other types of wood thanks to which the colours and grains show great variety. This cabinet also features an inlay border, patterned with cups at the bottom of the front and along the sides. The interior consists of removable and adjustable shelves and drawers on the top. The doors can be closed with a small key, which is a common element of drink cabinets from the era.

One of the briefest, yet among the most remarkable eras of 20th century design would have to be Sweden’s romantic national style known as Swedish Grace. This cabinet defines the style as a whole: refinement, simple lines enhanced by exquisite details and ancient motifs, all hand-made with extraordinary craftsmanship.
