Danish Modern Teak Modular Sofa, Denmark 1960s (sold)
Danish Modern Teak Modular Sofa, Denmark 1960s (sold)
Danish design is a remarkable combination of concern for functionality and materiality melded with a desire for outmost comfort. With a modern but also retro look, this three-seater has a charm that is delightfully unique.
Danish Modern designs are mostly utilitarian objects and as such they can become consonant with users in ways no designer, cabinetmaker, or marketing executive ever envisioned. At the same time - as this sofa shows - functionality was not perfected at the expense of aesthetic appeal and quality. This outstanding modular sofa has a creative design that allows it to be used in a number of ways, even as a daybed. With three seats and two table modules, the design offers plenty of room for versatility. Each seat is composed of a seat and backrest with gently rounded edges and an ergonomic shape. The roundness in combination with the light bouclé upholstery pairs incredibly well with the sharp lines of the body and the tables. The two tables resemble the nesting style with large surfaces that are still light in appearance. Since the individual modules of this sofa can be freely arranged in any order and therefore combination, the look of the space can be easily refreshed or even transformed completely. The heavy teak wooden base assures a stable foundation for the modules while showcasing the natural beauty of the wood.
Thanks in great part to an early emphasis on wood and a theoretical resistance to certain modernist currents by influential designers, the term Danish Modern has, over time, avoided associations with cold industrialization and machine aesthetics.

About the designer:
This Danish-made sofa reflects the core traditions and ideals of Danish design. Mid-century pieces such as this sofa were of great design, using fantastic wood like teak or beech. The era was the heyday of the production by master craftsmen. Mid-century Danish design is world-famous for the partnership between designer and manufacturer, resulting in ground-breaking creations.
A master cabinetmaker is not a carpenter, as this was a rare breed of craftsman who had to be recognized by the Danish government after several years of toiling at his craft, as well as having to ace gruelling design competitions before becoming a master cabinetmaker. Since Denmark was a special instance of tempered industrialization, it managed to preserve sound traditions and continue to safeguard values of craftsmanship, materiality and usability.
Today, Danish furniture is sought after by collectors for its classic looks, storied designs and solid quality, works that are truly soulful and timeless. ~H.
