Harbo Sølvsten Model "Tivoli-DF 22" Convertible Sofa, Denmark 1960s (sold)

$0.00

This rare sofa and daybed was made by Danish designer, Harbo Sølvsten, and is an exquisite piece of Danish Modern design history. While pieces from the mid-century era are generally characterized by clarity in design and extremely high-quality craftsmanship and choice of materials, this model is still remains exceptional.

“Tivoli-DF 22” represents the innovative spirit of the Danish Modern design movement; it features a sculptural exotic wood frame that is just as much in service of aesthetics as it is of functionality. The most noteworthy feature of this model is its ability to transform into a daybed. The frame features solutions that boast engineering level knowledge and precision, allowing the back structure to be laid down, converting the sofa into a bed. Thus, this model becomes a fully functional two-person daybed with a comfortable surface for lounging or sleeping. This functionality was a response to the changing lifestyles of the 1960s, where people began to value multi-functional furniture that could adapt to their needs. The elaborate and genius wooden structure is highlighted by the upholstered seat and back mattresses. The premium light fabric is festooned with button tufting that accentuates the fullness and adds an extra touch of sophistication and elegance to the design. Still, it is the innovative structure of this “Tivoli-DF 22” what sets it apart from other convertible sofas. From all angles the unique features catch the eyes, praising the designer and the manufacturer alike. While not much is known about Sølvsten, he designed for JCA Jensen Møbelfabrik during the mid-century era, therefore this sofa could have been made at their manufactory as well.

From the brass fittings to the beauty of the wood and the straps in the back, this model has plenty to offer. It exemplifies the Danish design philosophy of form following function, where every element of the design serves a purpose. Its ability to transform into a daybed without compromising on style or comfort is a testament to the innovative spirit of the designer, Harbo Sølvsten.
