Pair of Art Deco Club Chairs on Wooden Runners, France 1930s (sold)
Pair of Art Deco Club Chairs on Wooden Runners, France 1930s (sold)
When club chairs first appeared in the late 1920s they were originally referred to as the fauteuil confortable, or 'comfortable armchair', in France. They were mainly used in gentlemen’s clubs, thus later earning the name ‘club chair.’ Men would congregate in the clubs and find comfort in the chairs; nowadays, the most traditional use for the club chair is in the living room.
The design of this pair recalls the chic Art Deco era. While initially the chair style was called a ‘comfortable chair’, it soon began to be known by its now famous moniker because of its popularity among clubs, letting customers sink into them with a drink. These chairs provide great comfort thanks to their sizeable frames and removable seat cushions, covered in an elegant, light fabric. The upholstery’s clearly sectioned piping lines outline the shape visually, adding to the artistic impression of the design. These chairs are gracefully resting on two wooden runners, balancing the strong lines and proportions of the chairs perfectly. Like the legs, the bodies of these chairs are more squared, as opposed to the predominantly rounded lines of later mid-century modern designs. This style creates elegant lines with a more edgy, architectural look that is inherently stylish. Fulfilling the fundamental design principles of exceptional sitting comfort, the chairs must also look good from every angle, therefore the seats are slightly raised and the backs tilted for utmost comfort. Quality craftsmanship was evidently of optimum importance for the maker who created these chairs.
The craftsmanship of this pair’s maker was without a doubt of the highest quality, with a great sense of proportions. These beautiful, inviting club chairs live up to their Art Deco and mid-century modern heritage both in terms of design and quality, which is further elevated by the lush, streamlined upholstery.
