Pair of Ceramic and Brass Table Lamps by Pirkko Pylvänäinen, Finland 1960s (sold)

$0.00

These unique table lamps were designed in an era in which Finland saw the birth of many of its most iconic lighting models; it was a period of consistency, excellence, and sophistication in design. The mid-century modern era also gave rise to a rich and diverse landscape of ceramic art, which these lamps can attest to.

By the 1950s, Finland had established itself as a force for innovation in design. The best qualities of Finnish light fixtures are their atmospheric glow and disciplined, functionalist design that is not short of subtle decorative elements, with these elements being quite distinctive compared to other European models. Furthermore, this design is lovely with a clear focus on the ceramic bodies, featuring beautiful shades of navy blue, green, and turquoise. The colour variation of the bodies are reminiscent of the ocean or night sky. This overall aesthetic is essentially Nordic modern thanks to the combination of interesting material choices and a design that is inspired by nature. The light-coloured shades further enhance the visual interest of these lamps; the textured fabric complements the ceramic bodies and tames the design to make it fit seamlessly into any interior style.

While this shape of table lamp is fairly common, the maker managed to make this lamp anything but typical, which shows both their design savvy and craftsmanship skill. There was a strong emphasis on simplicity and functionality in Finnish lighting design, as designers sought to create objects that were both beautiful and practical, and this pair of lamps is a perfect example of this sentiment.
