A Pair of Einar Johansen Blue Stoneware Table Lamps for Søholm, Denmark ca 1960s (sold)

$0.00

‎These table lamps were designed by the brilliant Danish artist, Einar Johansen, and produced by Søholm Stentøj (Søholm Stoneware). The manufacturer was one of the oldest and most revered names in Danish ceramics. Johansen originally trained as a painter at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen where he honed his artistic skills before his employment at Søholm Stentøj.

The pair complements each other perfectly without being identical. The lamps take different shapes, with one being wider at the bottom, and having a long slender neck, while the other has a smaller body and shorter neck. Not only are the silhouettes different, but the models feature distinctive decorative elements on the square bodies. One displays a swirl pattern, while the other showcases a sculptural motif shaped like fluted steps leading up to the neck. These table lamps have a particularly lovely glaze, thick, deep, and full of colour nuances. The glazed bodies have blue and dark brown tones which highlight Johansen’s artistic touch. With their playful design the pair provides plenty of visual interest. The tapered necks are gently rounded, providing the perfect support for the shade. The classic empire shades are covered by a light fabric, completing the pieces. The overall aesthetic is essentially Nordic modern thanks to the combination of interesting material choices and a design that feels organic and natural.

In the middle of the 20th century, Einar Johansen created a wide range of stoneware, known as his "blue series" which has become highly sought after by collectors today. His works tread a fine line between art and design; they are not just functional objects but a piece of decor that encapsulates the organic aesthetic of mid-20th century design.
