Dutch Oak Art Deco Chairs with Rush Seats, The Netherlands 1920s (sold)

Dutch Oak Art Deco Chairs with Rush Seats, The Netherlands 1920s (sold)
The Art Deco style manifested across the spectrum of Dutch visual arts: from architecture, fine art, to the graphic and decorative arts. While Art Deco practitioners were often paying homage to modernist influences such as Cubism, De Stijl, and Futurism, the references were indirect; it was as though they were taking the end results of a few decades of distilling compositions to the most basic forms and inventing a new style that could be visually pleasing, exemplified by this pair of chairs.
Intricately embodying the Dutch modernist aesthetic of the 1920s, this pair of oak chairs invites contemplation and appreciation for the nuanced craftsmanship of the era. Like most Art Deco works, these chairs are symmetrical, geometric, streamlined, and simply pleasing to the eye. Evocative of the design aesthetic and principles associated with Dutch designer, Hendrik Wouda, these chairs exhibit an amalgamation of Art Deco influence and the austerity characteristic of the Haagse School movement. Crafted within the artistry of the decade, the chairs feature rush seating in a neat triangular pattern and meticulously carved details, offering a visual narrative of the period's commitment to both form and function. The rush seating, indicative of the period, adds an organic texture that complements the overall design, especially in combination with the beautifully patinated oak. The juxtaposition of the austere Amsterdam and Haagse School elements with the refined intricacies of Art Deco imparts a unique character to these pieces. From the nuanced carvings on the arms to the open backs and front stretchers, there is an emphasis on horizontal lines. The legs add verticality to the design with distinctive feet that are darker and carved into a smaller size, visually lifting the chairs off the ground.
As artefacts of an era marked by intellectual and artistic exploration, these chairs offer a tangible connection to the design philosophies that shaped the Dutch early modernist landscape. The preservation of historical integrity, coupled with the enduring aesthetic appeal, positions these chairs as exemplars of both the Haagse School and Art Deco craftsmanship—a visual journey into the heart of 1920s design sophistication.

Bas van Pelt was one of the key figures in early Dutch modernist design, active during the 1930s and 1940s through his firm “My Home.” His work is recognised for its clarity of construction, careful proportions, and thoughtful integration of natural materials. Van Pelt focused on creating furniture that balanced function and craftsmanship, often incorporating elements such as wicker, rattan, and solid wood to introduce both durability and texture.
This high-back chair by Bas van Pelt combines of strong verticality and refined material contrast. The solid wooden frame establishes a clear architectural outline, with the elongated tall back defining the silhouette. The back is composed by ladder-like horizontal slats that introduce a sense of rhythm while maintaining the openness of the design. The seat is crafted from woven wicker, a material valued for its strength and breathability, which adds a tactile, organic quality to the otherwise linear construction. This contrast between the smoothness of the frame and the texture of the woven surface is central to the chair’s character. The armrests are gently shaped, introducing a subtle curvature that softens the overall form. Below, the legs are connected by stretchers that reinforce the structure and ensure stability. The craftsmanship is evident in the precision of the joinery which contribute to the overall sense of durability and refinement.
This armchair shows why Bas van Pelt is widely regarded as a Dutch design icon. From the handcrafted frame to the beautiful woven element, the chair remains of hifh quality and ideally suited for everyday use.
