Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that describe this side table well. The evolution of mid-century design was a direct consequence of accepting, continuing, and further developing the ideas of the modern movement. It was, in a way, a “softer” version of the modern movement by adopting natural, organic forms.

The distinctive ‘guitar pick’ shape of this table is quite popular thanks to its functional and stylish look. Finn Juhl’s similar design for example has been relaunched recently due to popular demand. This original model from the 1950s has a very attractive and practical design that is also referred to as an end table. End tables are generally about the height of the arm of a chair or sofa and are used beside a larger piece of furniture. This table’s curved shape and generous surface area makes it a perfect side or end table, either next to a similarly curved piece, or next to a more rectangular design for contrast. Thanks to its universally appealing material and impeccable craftsmanship, it fits almost any design style. The structure showcases numerous functional elements, such as the solid wood top’s rim that prevents objects from falling off, and the interconnecting stretchers between the tripod legs that reinforces stability. It is apparent that equal attention was paid to the aesthetic quality, which is visible in the light curve of the legs and stretchers and the carefully crafted top. Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet were a French design duo who worked together during the 20th century. They were known for their innovative use of natural, sustainable materials, including rope, wicker, and bamboo. The duo’s work was heavily influenced by the Modernist movement, which sought to create functional and streamlined designs that were accessible to a wider audience.

Audoux & Minet’s pieces are characterised by a strong sense of craftsmanship, with each piece being handmade by the designers themselves or by skilled artisans. This dining table showcases a long rectangular top finished in warm wood veneer, its broad uninterrupted surface displays the grain. The top sits above thick base covered in a tightly woven natural fibre that introduces an immediate depth of tone and texture. The fibre flows across the supports in beautiful braided patterns, emphasising the bold and solid look. Across their faces, the rope is made into a geometric pattern which breaks up the woven surface to create a beautiful rhythm within the structure. The contrast of materials is central to the table’s character: the smooth, richly grained wooden top stands out against the coarse, rough and natural fibre below, allowing two very different surfaces to define the piece.
