Pair of Upholstered Art Deco Lounge Chairs, Europe circa 1940s (sold)

Pair of Upholstered Art Deco Lounge Chairs, Europe circa 1940s (sold)
Art Deco, the glamorous and influential design movement that emerged in France during the first half of the 20th century, left an indelible mark on the world of interior design. Characterised by its bold geometric shapes, rich materials, and luxurious aesthetics, Art Deco transformed the way we perceive interior spaces. It was a testament to the fusion of form and function, and this ethos is beautifully exemplified in this pair of chairs.
European designers sought to break away from the traditional and embrace bold and geometric, yet cosy, shapes. These lounge chairs are no exception; fully upholstered in a luxurious fabric, these chairs epitomise the essence of comfort and style. The large, enveloping backrests dictate the shape of these chairs, as they visually form most of the structure. Similarly to club chairs - a favourite of Art Deco enthusiasts - these chairs’ arms flow from the backrest, resulting in a wide design profile. Their stylish form is characterized by open, inviting lines, and soft, round edges. This design approach emphasised comfort and relaxation, a response to the desire for a more laid-back lifestyle and a rejection of the stiffness of earlier decades. The soft curves that define their shape not only evoke a sense of inviting comfort but also serve a practical purpose: the curvature conforms to the natural contours of the human body, making them the perfect spot to engage in leisurely conversation. The chairs' solid wooden feet provide gentle contrast to the soft textile, while also providing a sense of stability and durability, ensuring that this pair will keep standing the test of time. Art Deco design often incorporated geometric and angular elements - however, in these lounge chairs, there is a harmonious blend of curves and straight lines, resulting in a balanced and inviting aesthetic.
These chairs symbolise an era of sophistication and luxury, and their enduring popularity is a testament to the timeless allure of Art Deco pieces. They seamlessly integrate into a variety of design schemes, enhancing the overall aesthetic and imbuing the space with a touch of opulence.

From early on, a dialogue with nature became the prime force in the ongoing evolution of European mid-century modern design. This relationship with nature was much in evidence in mid-20th century design, which actively expanded on the metaphors and motifs therein. This stunning pair of easy chairs revolves around high-quality materials, comfort, and the mastery of the era’s European cabinetmakers. The open design is focused on the aesthetics of modernism, whilst employing the exquisite technique and material familiarity of highly skilled craftsmen. These chairs in many ways transcend the word ‘modern’ thanks to their unique look.
The design is focused on the aesthetics of the exquisite qualities of the upholstery. The outstanding look is the result of the brilliant pairing of materials. The solid wood structures’ smooth lines stand out even under the highly textural shearling, while also accentuating the individuality of the upholstery. The soft fibres of the lightweight, curly white shearling drape beautifully over the chairs, while the light colour provides an elegant impression. Shearling, Mongolian lamb/shearling (also known as shag) is a long, flouncy fur celebrated for its softness and luxurious volume. As it can be expected from European mid-century pieces, the unity of functionality and comfort are still kept at the core of the design. This is especially evident in the gently curved, enveloping backs and the tapered, conical legs. The lacquered solid wood legs’ rich colour and grain further highlight the upholstery, creating a balanced look. Thanks to its visual qualities, mainly the shearling’s lush texture and colour, this pair of infinitely cosy easy chairs can also be used as accent pieces to break the restrained aesthetic of any minimalistic space.
The use of exquisite materials, the combination of crafts with industrial production, and the obvious influence of the organic in European mid-century modern design all created a stir of excitement during the 20th century. This excitement carries on today thanks to pieces such as this exceptional pair.
