Swedish Modern Upholstered Sofa, Sweden First half of the 20th Century (sold)

$0.00

Designed in the early phase of what we know today as mid-century modern movement, this charming sofa is a unique piece of evidence of how traditional Swedish craftsmanship was brought into modernism. It beautifully embodies the clean lines and minimalist sensibilities of Scandinavian design.

Thanks to its crescent shape, this sofa is designed to bring people closer together to create a cosy atmosphere, which has been a core concept of Scandinavian design. The shape, from the curving lines to the wood and luxurious upholstery, not only creates an intimate gathering place but also defines the look of an interior. There is a great balance in the design, which is achieved through the clever use of the straight and rounded edges. The roundness is enhanced by the scalloped backrest. Visually, this sofa represents Swedish modernism by rejecting the traditional elements of past styles, such as heavy ornamentation. The dusty hazelnut upholstery stands out, but even with the stylish scalloping, it isn’t loud. Instead, it adds to the modern elegance and homeliness of this sofa. The six wooden legs add an organic feel, balancing out the voluptuous profile. The three pairs of tapered legs assure great structural stability, while also visually enhancing the width of the sofa. From every single angle, this sofa offers stunning lines and a rich texture. Above all, furniture designers of the era believed that design could certainly be used to improve people's lives. Looking at this model, this was evidently a not too far-fetched ideal.

The visual appearance is certainly the main focus of this sofa, but the exquisite craftsmanship under the fully upholstered body also deserves to be highlighted. This sofa has the capacity to anchor and to define the surrounding space.
