Asea AB, founded in 1883, was a Swedish electro-technical company headquartered in Västerås. The historic company not only produced high-quality lighting, but has had a decisive influence on how the Swedish lighting industry has developed. This ceiling lamp is a result of the collaboration between the Asea and design icon, Hans Bergström. The beautiful modernist design of this piece is based on timelessness and precision.

What the Danes call Hygge, the Swedes call Lagom, which refers to clean design that can be enjoyed without being distracted by too many details. The straightforward, effective, yet sophisticated approach to design is present in this ceiling lamp. The brass structure is quite traditional with a cone-shaped base that holds five symmetrically arranged arms, each featuring downward-facing white glass shades. While flush mount lighting sits directly against the ceiling, a semi-flush mount fixture, like this model, is suspended, leaving a small gap between the ceiling and the fixture. This allows for the light to be better distributed across a room, aided by the high number of light bulbs and their shades which produce an ambient atmosphere. When turned on, the warm light brightens up the brass’s colour creating a warm and cosy impression.

The company’s production extended across a wide range of equipment, including lighting, and its long manufacturing history placed it firmly within Sweden’s development of electrical technology. This set of three ceiling lamps represents the simple yet effective ethos that characterises much Scandinavian mid-century lighting, prioritising functionality, carefully judged proportions and the quality of illumination.

These lamps have an eye-catching rounded shape, with the edges just as soft as the light they diffuse. Each shade is formed entirely from opal glass, widening gently toward the ceiling before curving inward around the lower opening. The smooth transition between these rounded surfaces gives the shades a compact, almost bowl-like profile, while the opaque white glass keeps the form visually uniform. The use of opal glass is central to the design. When illuminated, it softens and disperses the light across the entire shade, producing a warm and balanced glow while concealing the light source within. Thanks to the concealed ceiling holders, the lamps are flush-mounted without any prominent exposed parts other than the opal glass shades. Their relatively shallow projection keeps them close to the ceiling, allowing the glass itself to remain the focal point. Hans Bergström was one of Sweden’s foremost lighting designers of the twentieth century. Trained as an architect and designer, he founded Ateljé Lyktan in 1934 and also created lighting for ASEA during the 1940s. His work combined carefully selected materials with simple, well-proportioned forms, with particular attention given to the quality and distribution of light. Model “E1149” was designed in the late 1940s and examples are documented with both the ASEA Belysning mark and the engraved model number.

The beauty of this table lamp lies in its simple combination of wood, brass and fabric. The central stem is made of fluted stained wood and has a tapered shape, with the narrow vertical grooves adding texture to its surface. The warm colour of the wood contrasts with the circular brass base below, which has a low, slightly raised profile and gives the lamp a stable foundation. The pairing of wood and brass creates an interesting visual effect, where the organic and traditional character of the wood meets the more polished appearance of the metal. A broad cylindrical fabric shade completes the design and balances the narrow stem with its generous horizontal shape. When illuminated, the fabric filters the light into a warm, atmospheric glow while bringing out the different colours and textures of the materials.

Model “E1149” shows Bergström’s ability to give a relatively simple table lamp character through proportion and material rather than unnecessary detail. The company began developing lighting for Swedish homes in the early 20th century, with its lighting production particularly prolific from the 1930s through the 1960s. This five-armed chandelier from circa 1950s represents a beautiful example of Swedish lighting.

This chandelier is constructed from an elegant metal frame with five arms arranged symmetrically around the centre. Long cords descend from the upper section before flowing outward to support the individual light points, creating an open structure with a strong vertical rhythm. Each brass arm terminates in a dark conical shade holder that continues into a tapered fabric shade. The contrast between the metal and the broad shades gives the lamp much of its character. The shades widen towards their open upper edges and are angled slightly outward, forming a flower-like arrangement around the centre. The opal glass that constructs the shades softens the light into a warm glow that has the power to balance the sharper quality of the dark metal elements. Above, through a simple black canopy, twisted cords ensure stability while giving the chandelier a light appearance despite its size. The symmetrical arrangement keeps the five shades separated, distributing the light evenly around the fixture.

The mouth blown glass with bubbles creates an intricate play between light and shadow, giving the appearance of light travelling through water. The black metal bends organically into a sinuous form, while the back-plate has a square shape.
