Ceiling Lamp by Hans Bergström for Asea, Sweden Mid 20th century (sold)
Asea AB, founded in 1883, was a Swedish electro-technical company headquartered in Västerås. The historic company not only produced high-quality lighting, but has had a decisive influence on how the Swedish lighting industry has developed. This ceiling lamp is a result of the collaboration between the Asea and design icon, Hans Bergström. The beautiful modernist design of this piece is based on timelessness and precision.
What the Danes call Hygge, the Swedes call Lagom, which refers to clean design that can be enjoyed without being distracted by too many details. The straightforward, effective, yet sophisticated approach to design is present in this ceiling lamp. The brass structure is quite traditional with a cone-shaped base that holds five symmetrically arranged arms, each featuring downward-facing white glass shades. While flush mount lighting sits directly against the ceiling, a semi-flush mount fixture, like this model, is suspended, leaving a small gap between the ceiling and the fixture. This allows for the light to be better distributed across a room, aided by the high number of light bulbs and their shades which produce an ambient atmosphere. When turned on, the warm light brightens up the brass’s colour creating a warm and cosy impression.
This classic ceiling lamp is the result of the simple, yet effective ethos that prioritises functionality, and the Swedish idea of “good design”. Ceiling fixtures, such as this model have the power to transform a space into a haven of relaxation while bringing a stylish touch to a room.

ASEA has a rich heritage rooted in lighting innovation - pushing boundaries and redefining norms, thus playing a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of Swedish lighting design during the 20th century. Their commitment to quality craftsmanship and avant-garde design principles set them apart as pioneers in the industry and are the reason the company has remained iconic as a manufacturer of Swedish mid-century lighting to this day.
This lamp is constructed around a slender brass stem rising from a circular base, creating a defined vertical axis that gives the piece a light presence. Brass was the preferred material choice during this period, not only for its durability but also for the tonal warmth it lends to simple forms. The minimal structure allows the eye to move effortlessly upward toward the shade, a standout feature of the design. The fabric shade introduces a gentle decorative element through its softly pleated and scalloped edge, a subtle and cosy addition to the otherwise restrained silhouette. This detail adds a sense of softness, while also shaping the light into a warm, diffused glow. The contrast between the smooth, reflective brass and the textured shade of fabric creates a quiet interplay of materials. Despite its simplicity, the proportions are carefully judged, ensuring that all elements work together.
This floor lamp’s presence is an excellent way to elevate the ambience of a room, creating an inviting and stylish atmosphere. The piece is particularly adaptable, capable of blending into a range of interiors while still offering a refined point of interest. It reflects a side of Scandinavian design that prioritises atmosphere and usability, where even the most modest objects are shaped with intention and care.
