Italian Mid-Century Upholstered Lounge Chairs, Italy 1950s (sold)

The 1950s saw brilliant Italian designers working to create furniture of the highest quality that explored truly modern shapes and forms. These designers experimented with new materials and construction methods but, crucially, they kept the elegance inherent in Italian design. This pair of sculptural lounge chairs show how successful these experiments were.

With a clear preoccupation with geometry, these chairs’ outstanding architectural frames speak of the mastery of the designer and of the producer. The clearly lined cherry wood frame contrasts beautifully with the upholstery. The padded velvet fabric highlights the shapes and angles, such as the pointed “ears” at the top and the armrests that are fully covered in the grey fabric. Despite the lush fabric, the bodies remain clear-cut, mirroring the frames. As the wooden frames’ parts intersect at numerous points, the structures appear to be very elaborate. Most dominant are the ‘V’ shaped legs and the seats and backs that are joined in a similar shape. While the refined linearity defines the overall aesthetic, functionality was clearly an important aspect of the design. Due to the well-chosen proportions and upholstered bodies, these chairs offer great comfort. The lines are crisp and elegant, with the seats and backrests creating an angle that is aiding the stability, comfort, and ergonomics. On the decoration front the chairs aren’t in need of much thanks to the brilliance of the design itself, therefore the sole decorative element is the single line of tufted buttons on each chair.

The design was created in the golden days of Italian mid-century modernism, when Italian design giants like Gio Ponti and Paolo Buffa worked as well. With an outstanding design, quality materials and Italian design elements, this pair is sure to provide comfort and style in any interior.
