Mid-Century Curved Italian Sofa Upholstered in Mohair, Italy ca 1950s (sold)

$0.00

Italian mid-century furniture and interior design is known for its elegantly organic forms. The era’s seating models - including this sofa - were created to highlight the spirit of rebirth of post-war furniture design characterised by clean lines and a free spirit.

The idea of freedom expressed so flamboyantly in America was one of the most influential factors on Italy and therefore on Italian design as well. This American influence encouraged a more consumer and leisurely attitude towards life. As such, this sofa has a sculptural, “free” look. Through it’s fluid and pleasant shape, the sofa’s apparent simplicity serves as an ode to the pursuit of elegant functionality. The enveloping shape of the sofa’s body encourages conversation and interaction, thanks to its welcoming curvature. While most curved sofas of the era feature tufting and other forms of decoration, this model is free from unnecessary ornamentation, resulting in a sleek, elegant and modern look. This detail sets the piece apart and transforms it into a statement piece which can break the monotony of any space. Furthermore, the six conical wood legs add an organic feel, balancing out the voluptuous profile. The three pairs of tapered legs assure great structural stability, while also enhancing the width of the sofa visually.

The historic movement of mid-century modern continues to permeate our sense of what is contemporary. With a classic look, storied design and solid quality, this unique sofa is truly elegant and timeless, ideal as a statement piece thanks to its stylish colour and characteristic design.
