With their origins in a small workshop in Aarhus, Fog & Mørup was founded by Ansgar Fog and Erik Mørup. The company grew their reputation gradually, and by the 1930s and 40s, were one of the most well-known manufacturers in Denmark. Many of their most successful models explored the relationship between light, structure, and ornament, resulting in fixtures that functioned as decorative objects even when unlit, and this hanging lamp model is the perfect example.

Model “E8655” stands apart through its remarkably graphic composition. Suspended from slender stems, the fixtures culminate in radial arrangements that resemble flowers, propellers, or stylised sun representations. Lights in varying lengths extend outward from a dark central structure, creating a striking contrast that emphasizes the geometry of the design. A well-chosen lighting piece can change the overall look of a room and how it feels to be in that room. Historically, chandeliers would hang in the foyer or dining room, however, nowadays, a ceiling lights are often placed in smaller rooms or even a bathroom to set the aesthetic impression of the space.

This marvellous ceiling lamp has a brass frame with three opal glass shades on each curved brass pole. The combination of brass and glass was especially characteristic of Scandinavian designers of the era as the brass shines beautifully when the light is on. Thanks to the symmetrical arrangement of the brass poles and shades, the design is airy leaving the focus on the opal glass and brass. At the same time, it also allows the decorated cluster to stay visible from every angle. The finial and V-shaped brass “vase” on the cluster are beautifully crafted with the latter adjusted to the rods’ curves. The brass tubing emerges from this “vase”- like form and has a long, straight look that highlights the shades’ and cluster’s shape. The shade holders, like the cluster, have grey powder coating with brass rings on them. This feature gives a lot of character to his model, while also distinguishing it from similar ones. Overall, the design is very successful at mixing traditional and modern elements while staying true to the guiding principles of mid-century modernism.

Working for the Stockmann owned manufacturer, Orno, she developed a design language rooted in functionality, simplicity, and the careful shaping of light. Johansson-Pape believed that a lamp should create a pleasant atmosphere, allowing form and decoration to support rather than overshadow its purpose. 

This pair of model “1116” ceiling lights combines opal glass and brass to create an iconic Finnish modern look. The fixtures are composed around broad, gently tapering shades whose softly curved profiles create an elegant silhouette against the ceiling.
