French industrial designer Oliver Mourgue obtained his degree in Interior Design at the prestigious École Boulle, from where he went on to pursue his passion in furniture design at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. After training in Finland and Sweden, he then began his collaboration with Airborne International, one of France’s most successful and influential design companies of the modernist era.

In 1965 he designed the ‘Djinn Series’, inspired by the figure of the ‘djinni’ (genie), a mystical creature of Arabian fairy tales capable of morphing into human or animal form. This fluid uncertainty is clearly visible in the elegant shape of the daybed, where curved edges and softly folded ends connect seamlessly with the low-slung seating. The carefully crafted ergonomic design moulds perfectly to a resting human figure. Designed in the 1950s by Aake Anttila and manufactured by Lahti Lepokaulusto, this “Susanna” sofa is a wonderful commemoration of Finnish mid-century design. While Finnish design is often associated with strict functionalism, many designers introduced a greater sense of comfort and informality into their work, particularly in upholstered furniture.

Aake Antilla was one of a group of people that established Lepokalusto in 1953. Antilla was in charge of designing all of the furniture in the first few years - including this sofa model - which immediately caught the attention of the press. This sofa combines a low, elongated profile and gently sculpted silhouette. The body is fully upholstered, with a continuous line running along the backrest, creating a soft form. The backrest features subtle button tufting, adding a layer of texture and rhythm without disrupting the overall simplicity. The seat is broad and padded, emphasizing comfort while maintaining a clean horizontal line. Gentle, rounded lines characterise the design with a solid wooden structure that is seemingly simple. In reality, the engineering is quite remarkable, from the way the legs are formed to how the back connects to them and supports the upholstered cushion. Edward Wormley took the best elements from classical, historical Scandinavian and other European furniture design and translated them into a Modern vernacular. The result was furniture like this exceptional “New York” sofa - sophisticated, stylish, understated and exceptionally well-made.

Officially known as model “5316”, this sofa was originally designed for the American furniture company, Dunbar in the 1950s. This sofa version of “5316”, was made on license in Sweden by Ljungs Industrier/ DUX. Wormley's USA-based company, Dunbar, collaborated with the Swedish furniture manufacturer DUX, who presented a series of what they called "Bra Bohag", where this version was marketed as "New York" in the most expensive price category. The design stands as a timeless example of the enduring appeal of modernist aesthetics in the world of furniture design. This iconic model epitomizes the clean lines, functionality, and understated elegance that define the modernist movement. The solid wood frame holds the upholstered body effortlessly with an airy arrangement that lets the individual parts all stand out. About the designer:

Edward J Wormley (December 31, 1907 – November 3, 1995) was an American designer of modern furniture. In 1926, he briefly studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Due to financial restrictions, he began work as an interior designer for Marshall Fields & Company department store. During the Depression, Wormley was introduced to the president of Dunbar Furniture Company of Berne, Indiana, who hired him to upgrade their product line.

Dunbar made a good choice, as he met immediate success with Wormley's work. In 1944 the company decided to focus strictly on Modern lines, and Edward Wormley rose to the task, incorporating European and Scandinavian innovations.

His eye for quality and the exacting craftsmanship at Dunbar made for furniture that was elegant, understated and exceptionally well-made. Wormley was never really at the forefront of Modern design. Instead, he took the best elements from classical, historical design and translated them into Modern vernacular. The result was furniture that was sophisticated, yet mainstream and very successful.

Wormley's inclusion in the Good Design Exhibitions staged by the Museum of Modern Art and the Merchandise Mart between 1950 and 1955 elevated him to a respected place alongside more cutting edge designers like Bertoia, Nelson and Eames. In 1938 MoMA launched an exhibit they called Useful Objects, in which they showcased “design intended for present-day life, in regard to usefulness, to production methods and materials and to the progressive taste of the day.”

In the wake of America’s postwar prosperity, the exhibit was later renamed Good Design and largely focused on modern furnishings. The exhibit reopened in 1950 under the name Good Design with three of Edward Wormley’s works on display: an adjustable upholstered wood armchair, a “Short John” coffee table with laminated wood legs, and a “Repartee” gray carpet.

Wormley’s inclusion in the exhibit proved that traditional forms still had a place in the modern design movement. During the exhibit’s run thirty Wormley pieces were awarded Good Design designation, cementing him as a peer among other high-profile designers of the era. Wormley understood the essential elements of Modernism but never limited himself to one ideology. His furniture represented a convergence of historical design and 20th century innovation that greatly appeals to today's collectors.

About the Designer:

Robert Guillerme graduated in 1934 from the École Boulle where he excelled in architecture and furniture design. After the Second World War he moved to Lille, in the north of France, where he decorated homes and designed furniture for the well regarded Rogier workshops.

In 1948, Guillerme was joined by his long-time friend, decorator Jacques Chambron in Lille. The following year Guillerme and Chambron met master cabinetmaker Émile Dariosecq, owner of a woodworking shop and the company Votre Maison was born. Together, they defined and imposed a new furniture concept. Thanks to their distinctive creativity, originality, and quality, the Votre Maison quickly became well-known.

The Votre Maison marked the history of French design. Guillerme drew the furniture designs while Chambron played the part of salesman, welcoming and advising clients. The power duo was complemented by Dariosecq, whose workshop took charge of the manufacturing. Together, they defined new furnishings concepts. Well-crafted chair back, polished wood and thick cushions make the reputation of their armchairs and sofas. Votre Maison continued to produce furniture right into the 20th century, with Jacques’s son Hervé Chambron, a designer and graduate of the École Boulle, having taken the over in 1983. ~H.

In the 1970s, the power of television sparked a profound shift in households and a sofa became a "must-have". Sofas became the core of the "Les Contemporains" collection at French retailer, Roche Bobois, with this rare model in their famed repertoire.

This stunning three-seater sofa stands on a plinth in polished stainless steel. This design feature immediately sets the modern edge of this model, making the contrast of its materials’ texture, colour, and look the main design element. The seat and back form a permanently reclined angle, with six individual cushions comprising the seat and back. The brown suede fabric covers the cushions with deep stitches enhancing the fabric’s luxurious qualities. The contrast between the brushed steel and suede is stark, which creates tension. Still, the sofa is in perfect visual balance thanks to the carefully measured proportions. In the absence of arms, the design remains very open and light despite the characteristic materials. The design is commonly attributed to Jacques Charpentier, who was a French decorator and editor. He studied at the Boulle School and graduated in 1945 after which he began his career by opening a workshop in Paris, where from the 1960s, he designed stainless steel sofas. By the end of 1970, his company had nearly sixty employees.

Carl Malmsten devoted his life to the renewal of Swedish craftsmanship, inspired to create furniture endowed with a creative simplicity, with functionality in mind and a high technical quality. His talent to innovate and produce unique pieces is showcased in his design of the “Hemmakväll” sofa.

From 1956 onward, O.H. Sjögren's Upholstery Workshop in Tranås became one of Carl Malmsten’s key production hubs that met all of the quality standards required. Their collaboration was followed by his exhibition at the Röhsska Museum of Design and Craft in Gothenburg where he showcased, for the first time, furniture designed for serial production. One of these series was dedicated to the family home, and included the “Hemmakväll” sofa (other items in the same series are also recognisable Malmsten pieces, such as “Farmor” and “Lillasyter”). This series inspired by familiar comforts evokes a special feeling or mood, which is also reflected in how he named his designs. “Hemmakväll” translates to “Home Evening”, evoking cosiness, joy and expressing the act of a family gathering. The design of this sofa aims to maximise comfort and function, while simultaneously putting an emphasis on elegance and refinement. This is most visible in the round, welcoming body and the eye-catching parallel lines of tufted buttons, all enhanced by the luxurious fabric of the sofa. The complementary geometrical pillows are accent pieces that add visual interest through a variation of textures, colours, and shapes. The sofa’s short, pine wood legs add a modern and organic feel, balancing out the voluptuous profile of the piece.

Carl Malmsten was - and still is - one of the most famous furniture designers in Sweden, who was also active in the cultural and political sphere of the country. He had a lasting influence on Swedish and contemporary furniture design, and was known for his devotion to ‘slöjd’ (traditional Swedish craftsmanship), which is visible in every one of his models. With this sofa, the ‘slöjd’ is combined with modern elements and luxurious upholstery to create stylish pieces with longevity for generations to come.

Condition:
