Pair of Brass and Leather Floor Lamps by Alf Svensson and Yngvar Sandström for Bergboms, Sweden 1960s (sold)

This model was created by Alf Svensson and Yngvar Sandström for the Swedish firm Bergboms during the golden age of Scandinavian lighting design. The model is characterised by its minimal form and stylish materials: the bodies are composed of a beautiful wrapped leather stem, which is complemented by the brass elements and light-coloured fabric shades.

Floor lamps have been used as decorative focal points for rooms since the early 20th century and rightfully so. The precise construction of these elegant floor lamps ensure that every detail was carefully considered, from the proportions to the mix of materials. Each lamp features a sleek wrapped stem that transitions into a smooth round brass base, showcasing the impeccable craftsmanship and attention to detail characteristic of Bergboms' work. The warm, golden hue of the brass elements is complemented by a minimalist design, allowing the lamps to seamlessly integrate into a variety of interior styles. The lamps' fabric shades further add a subtle touch of sophistication and help diffuse the light in a soft, inviting manner. The combination of the materials creates a harmonious balance of form and function. The lamps are not only a source of illumination but also a statement of timeless design and quality, making them a cherished addition to any room. In Swedish mid-century design, where interior lighting is of particular importance, designers managed to master the art of soft, cosy light without blinding or crushing space perception and that is evident here.

The maker of this lamp, Bergboms, was a prominent Swedish lighting firm which manufactured both its own models and those of international designers such as Bernard Schottlander and Greta Magnusson-Grossman. Bergboms was founded by Efraim Ljung, who also founded Ljungs industrier (subsequently DUX).
