European Mid-Century Modern Lounge Chair, Europe 1950s (sold)

European Mid-Century Modern Lounge Chair, Europe 1950s (sold)
Dozens of pieces of furniture labelled with the design-world buzzwords “mid-century” and “mid-century modern” will come up on practically any furniture retailer’s search pane despite the fact that there is hardly anything that relates to the era’s design. This lounge chair however, is a true and unique example of the innovativeness of the style.
Admittedly, mid-century modern is a difficult term to define. Most of the designs of the mid-century had gone out of fashion by the late 60s, but in the early- to mid-eighties, interest in the period began to return. Looking at this chair it is easy to see why. There are several characteristics that will never go out of style: quality materials, functionality, and craftsmanship. This model has a defined curve that dictates the overall look. The upholstered body is curved with sectional parts, thanks to which the comfort of this lounge is supreme. Thanks to the ergonomics, the body of the sitter is fully supported. While the design is led by the upholstered structure, the tapered beech legs and armrests are also very appealing with their warm colour. The white lacquered metal arms in particular are an interesting and unexpected feature that adds modernity to the design and shows the experimentation with materials that defined the era.
Mid-century pieces are simply well-designed objects, with a timeless look that sits very well in contemporary homes and interiors—they still feel fresh today, they still feel modern. A lot of those pieces haven’t been bettered. They still stand the test of time as this unique lounge chair shows.

The postwar boom years of the 1950s through to the 1960s were one of the periods of greatest influence of Italian designers. The models created during this period paved a way to a more aesthetical approach to products as opposed to their utilitarian predecessors, resulting in exceptional pieces like this “Hall” armchair.
This stunning piece was designed by Roberto Menghi, a renowned Italian designer who was the recipient of two Compasso d’Oro awards and two Grand Prizes at the Triennale di Milano. This piece effortlessly showcases Menghi’s design prowess and architectural precision. The design epitomises the unique blend of style, craftsmanship, and innovation that characterised Italian design in the mid-20th century. There are several features that show these different style elements starting with the fully upholstered, sculptural body and tapered metal legs. With its outward pointing armrests and the dynamic lines of the seating, the chair combines modern forms and ideals to obtain a timeless, impressive piece of furniture. Furthermore, the blue mohair fabric adds a rich and luxurious look and feel, with the deep, warm hue of the upholstery creating a sense of opulence, making it an ideal choice for an eye-catching interior. The mohair’s tone enhances the sculptural qualities of the form, contrasting the crisp, linear frame with a plush, inviting surface.
The "Hall" armchair is not only functional and comfortable but is also a statement of artistic craftsmanship, making it a perfect addition to any interior. With its timeless appeal and unique character, this chair captures the essence of Italian mid-century design, inviting admiration and comfort.

Crafted during a time when movements like Modernism were reshaping design worldwide, this early 20th-century armchair reflect a transitional style rooted in both simplicity and elegance. This era emphasizes clean lines, unique shapes, and high-quality craftsmanship to achieve timeless pieces like this one.
This remarkable armchair was designed by German artist, Willi Ohler. The so-called “Worpsweder” either denote chairs made at the Worpsweder Kunsthütten (Worpsweder arts huts) in Germany, or a specific style of German chairs with solid wood frames, broad armrests, often from tall wood, with woven seats and backs. These piece features all of those characteristics. The honey-toned wood highlights the warm patina that has developed over decades. The softly sculpted armrests framing the chair bring both elegance and ergonomic comfort to the overall form. Woven wicker is the main highlight of the piece. The material is used to construct the seat and tall backrest. The beautifully symmetrical pattern showcases the timeless artistry of artisanal furniture. The rectangular, slim legs create a sleek structure while not abandoning sturdiness. This chair preserves the value and beauty of master craftsmanship and exquisite materials.
Worpswede in Lower Saxony is famous nationwide for its long tradition as an artists' colony. Nowadays, about 130 artists and craftsmen and women live there permanently. The artists who created the so called "Worpsweder Kuentlerkolonie" were looking for the simple and original in art and life. The traditional reed and rush woven chairs of this region were greatly appreciated by the artists of the colony, and some of them were still produced around 1900-1920. They have become collectors’ pieces thanks to the craftsmanship that went into each chair’s creation.

This “Canada” or model P110 chair was designed by Osvaldo Borsani in 1965 and manufactured by the Borsani brothers’ company, Tecno. The chair is enriched with mechanical components that give it versatility in terms of composition, shape and arrangement.
The Borsani brothers’ company, founded in 1953, had strong ideals, mainly a philosophy of quality. Just like the company’s name in Italy, this “Canada” lounge chair is unmistakable. The wooden structure serves as the base for the upholstered sections that are divided into three parts. Immediately standing out are the oversized buttons, seven on both sides, that secure the cushions in place, while also increasing the visual quality of the chair. The extraordinary heritage of craftsmanship in the treatment of materials, in the attention to detail, in the interpretation of the shape defines this chair. Thanks to the innovative language of the design, this model can fit perfectly into any interior while still standing out visually.
The “Canada” lounge chair shows the rigor of form, the quality of materials and workmanship, and the attention to the opportunities of technology that Tecno is known for. The chair is upholstered in leather, which contrasts beautifully to the peculiar body.

Ergonomic in its structure, this mid-century armchair showcases the best characteristics of post-war Italian design. These postwar boom years of the 1950s through the 1960s were a greatly influential - and experimental - period for Italian creatives. Striking in its balanced proportions and clean architectural lines, this armchair was born of careful decision making, where every curve, joint and surface was conceptualised with comfort and sculptural grace in mind.
The elegant lines of the chair create a pleasing visual balance, a result of the gently rounded back and pointed wingback crown. The silhouette, with its open construction, is comprised of an enveloping back that flows down in a curve towards the generous seat, forming a cocoon for the sitter. Creating a welcoming impression, the sheltering arms hug the person even further, adding a further layer of relaxation. The arms, slightly overturning at the ends, unfold the form of the design and emphasise its openness and welcoming spirit even further. The dark, splayed legs ensure stability, and their minimal shape allow the chair’s body to shine as the focal point. Acting as complementary elements, the tapered legs on the bottom are in harmony with the sharp peaks at the top of the backrest. Meanwhile, along the midsection, the elegant overspill of the armrests traces the sides, opening up the structure and introducing another intriguing dimension that deepens the visual presence of the piece. The armchair is full of unique design elements, but rather than working against each other, they instead unify the design through their shared aesthetic characteristics. In their own unique way, these small details are striving for the same sophisticated style. Recently upholstered in premium fabric, the chair flourishes in a beautiful, neutral colour that complements any interior.
The subtle colour of the chair, combined with its elegant form, provides a beautiful visual cohesiveness. This armchair is not just a functional sitting element, but also brings its own refined character into the atmosphere of the room, making it simultaneously both charming and practical.

Italian designer Giancarlo Piretti emerged as a leading figure in postwar furniture design, known for combining technical ingenuity with sculptural forms. A longtime collaborator with Anonima Castelli, Piretti developed several groundbreaking pieces in the 1960s and 70s, many of which explored modularity, and ergonomics. His works, such as the iconic Plia folding Chair and Plia Table won multiple international design awards, and still find their home in museums word-wide, from Austria to the Czech Republic, Slovenia and the United States.
The “Alky” lounge chair, first released in the early 1970s, is among his most celebrated works and reflects the experimental spirit of the period while maintaining a strong sense of comfort and approachability. The chair showcases its signature curvilinear form, expertly upholstered in a soft off-white bouclé that enhances the chair’s inviting charm. The piece is organic, almost reminiscent of a cloud, both thanks to its plushy shape and soft fabric. The design features a continuous silhouette from backrest to seat to base, all supported by a lightweight aluminium structure. The sled frame rests on two aluminium feet, ensuring the stability of the chair. Its organic shape hugs the body and provides a comfortable sitting experience, highlighting Piretti’s attention to ergonomics. The design is balanced, as the textile surface adds warmth, contrasting the modernist structure with a sense of softness.
This “Alky” chair remains an example of 1970s Italian design and a perfect illustration of how form and function can harmonise effortlessly. Ideal as a statement piece in a living room, lounge, or studio, it offers timeless comfort and a sculptural presence that continues to resonate in contemporary interiors.

This lounge chair and ottoman is an elegant and comfortable evidence of the mastery and artistry of the European cabinetmakers who defined mid-20th century modern seating. This duo is of the highest quality, both in terms of visual quality, materials, and craftsmanship. Mid-century modern is notable for its blending of classic modern design with a slightly more updated feel. This beautiful lounge chair and ottoman have a classic, comfortable style that is a prime example of the best qualities of what is referred to as mid-century modernism.
European furniture from the mid-20th century revolutionized the history of what we consider modern design today. Lounge chairs in particular have become unrivalled references in it. Cabinetmaker lounge chairs may seem similar at first sight, however each model’s individuality becomes evident upon closer inspection. In this lounge chair’s case, its sheer volume and the welcoming, “bear-like” shape stand out immediately. Still, it is the upholstered legs that provide its unique visual character. The synthesis that this chair and ottoman have achieved between form and function is outstanding, aesthetics and utility come together in a purely mid-century manner. The fully upholstered wooden frame rests on upholstered wood legs. The legs’ shape is still visible despite being covered in fabric. Without any tufting or festooning, the focus is on the round, flowing lines of the bodies and their upholstery. The exceptionally soft, premium wool blend fabric highlights the frames’ round edges, especially the chair’s voluminous arm- and backrest and similarly, the ottoman’s body.
We have added a matching, upholstered ottoman to provide additional comfort and visual interest. The round back and similarly upholstered legs on the ottoman are a pleasant touch that make a long-lasting, rock solid foundation for any seating. They also tie the ottoman to the chair visually. From the frames to the upholstery, this lounge chair and ottoman guarantee utmost quality and longevity. The pieces of this set are -quite literally - fully upholstered in a premium wool blend fabric that lends them a luxurious impression. Thanks to this combination of materials, the set is extremely soft and comfortable.

The "Stora Kraal" easy chair was originally designed by Kerstin Hörlin-Holmquist in 1952, and was quickly incorporated into Nordiska Kompaniet’s famous Triva Collection, a new versatile furniture series aimed at modern, postwar consumers.
Lacquered metal, wicker and leather. This model is defined by its materials and its immediately recognizable design created by the masterful combination of them. Known for her unique and humanistic design vision, Hörlin-Holmquist created the Stora Kraal according to these principles. Accordingly, this model holds a soft simplicity and a uniqueness in its appearance - light, clean lines with organic materials and form. Without worrying about short-lived trends and what other people thought, Hörlin-Holmquist created the peculiar, shell shape of this chair that is only increasing in popularity. The design is very open, the backrest flows down and opens up to form the armrests and wide seat. While the armrests sit low and hardly separate from the back and seat, they still give the impression of hugging the sitter. The woven wicker body is held by the metal structure that is composed in a masterful way, providing stability despite its light, minimal appearance.
Hörlin-Holmquist took a larger role in the development of the Triva Collection to provide Nordiska Kompaniet with a variety of furniture designs and interior fittings that expressed a modern Scandinavian ethos through soft lines and adaptive humanism. This Stora Kraal, thanks to its materials, is the collection’s most organic piece, and to many, the most desired one as well.

About the Designer:
Kerstin Hörlin-Holmquist was born on May 30, 1925 in Arvika, Sweden. She was a Swedish modernist architect and designer. Hörlin-Holmquist graduated from Stockholm’s Konstfack in 1952, and before that she studied and worked in England.
She often worked with her husband Erik Holmquist, and together they modelled and created the pieces together. A key aspect for the couple was always to test their designs in their own home before completing a project.
"I think both furniture and textiles, wherever they end up, must be kind, gentle and courteous, but without losing their character. They should have human qualities, not be pompous and only stand alone, but be able to adapt to the environment they end up in..."
Hörlin-Holmquist worked and studied in England from 1946-1947 immediately after the war, where she also studied art history and became fascinated with the classic English upholstered furniture and style. Something that without a doubt inspired her own creations later in life while she still developed her own expression. She returned to Sweden where she attended Konstfack from 1948 and graduated from the school in 1952. She started working with Nordiska Kompaniet shortly after her graduation and became a lead designer. Her timeless and iconic ‘Paradiset Collection’ was created during her employment with Nordiska Kompaniet in 1956-1957 and holds a soft simplicity and a uniqueness in its appearance - light, clean lines and yet gracious with an air of romance.
Today, her designs are highly treasured collectibles. She is primarily remembered, for her ability to create designs for the modern home in the 1950s without worrying about short-lived trends and what other people thought - to stay true to her own unique and humanistic design vision. ~H.

Early 20th century designers were eager to break free from the aesthetics of the past and experiment with new forms and techniques. At the same time, especially in Europe, the modernist design movement was often based on traditional styles and approaches, such as wood turning. This armchair exudes vintage charm and craftsmanship, blending intricate design with timeless elegance.
This chair model boasts a functional, well-thought-out structure, crafted from quality oak. The openness of the piece is highlighted by its horizontal slats, from the stretchers placed between the feet to the the backrest. Still, at the heart of this chair lays its materials; the durable oak and the traditional woven wicker. The wicker seat, a hallmark of practicality and comfort, adds a layer of tactile warmth to this chair. The intertwining fibres create a resilient and breathable surface that showcases the diagonal cross pattern commonly referred to as “rush weave” or wicker. Additionally, the textured surface of the woven rush contrasts nicely with the wood. The attention to craftsmanship is further evidenced by the lower structure, featuring two bobbin turned legs. This is a type of ornament which consists of a series of small knobs resembling spools, or bobbins. The detailed wood carving creates a sophisticated, almost sculptural quality, giving the chair a unique sense of texture and depth.
With its organic feel and natural elements, this chair stands out with its timeless appeal. The piece’s simple yet refined structure allows them to integrate into various interior styles, from vintage-inspired rooms to more contemporary settings where they add a touch of old-world charm.

Danish Mid-Century Modern furniture reflected Scandinavian materials and craftsmanship and mixed them with a modern style, and the period from roughly 1940 through 1960 was a high point for Danish furniture makers. This set shows why.
This particular chair silhouette has been popular since the 1930s, from around the time Flemming Lassen designed the overstuffed easy chair, the “Tired Man”, for The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Competition in 1935. The curved and organic lines of the design create an elegant silhouette for both the chair and ottoman. The design of this chair is characterized by organic, curved shapes that create a cosy and welcoming sensation. Since the enveloping back forms the arms as well but doesn’t reach all the way to the beginning of the seat, the design is very open and appears light. The gentle lines are highlighted by the soft wool blend upholstery that uniquely covers the entire bodies of the chair and footstool, including the legs as well. As a representation of early modernist seating, there is a profound focus on comfort and cosiness, that invokes a pleasant homelike feeling. Master cabinetmakers were highly aware of body proportions, prioritizing comfort just as much as the visual qualities, therefore this lounge chair provides support for the back and great sitting comfort.
We have added a newly produced matching, upholstered footstool to provide additional comfort and visual interest. Its design matches the chair with its round shape and soft wool blend upholstery. Together, they form a cosy and luxurious set that exudes Danish design and craftsmanship.

About the Designer:
Thepractical and comfortable designs of Danish cabinetmakers defined mid-20th century modern seating. The Danish Cabinetmakers focused on minimalist design executed by expertly skilled craftsmen.
Works from the Danish Cabinet-Makers' Guild is a concept of its own in collectible design. The Cabinet-Makers' Guild began annual exhibitions in 1927 in Copenhagen. The group formed an exhibit showing each year in October the quality furniture made to drawings by gifted architects. The exhibition took place each year, without interruption, for forty years. A number of successful Danish Design collaborations were formed during this time between cabinetmakers and architects.
Danish Modernism has influenced Scandinavian furniture to a great degree, defined by minimalism, simplicity, and functionality. The muted colours and gentle designs make Danish mid-century furniture an ideal addition to contemporary living spaces. Additionally, master cabinetmakers were highly aware of body proportions, prioritizing comfort just as much as the visual qualities.
The works of master cabinetmakers – such as this chair – are of the highest quality, both in terms of materials and craftsmanship. Cabinetmakers take the art of working with wood one step further, and focus on the finer details of what can be created with the material. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that numerous master cabinetmakers are part of the renowned Danish Culture Canon (Danish: Kulturkanonen). The canon contains no more than 108 works of cultural excellence, based on works with a useful function and that are still recognizable today. This small armchair is the perfect illustration of Danish design, and the work of a true cabinetmaker. ~H.

This individualistic chair possesses a look that is eternally relevant regardless of current trends, a charm that would likely be called ‘the mid-century modern style’. Even after decades, interior items from Italian manufacturers look like works of art. This lounge chair exemplifies modern design that leans toward a minimalist approach with open spaces and clean, refined lines.
The design language is entirely dedicated to the organic-modern style of the 1950s. Much like in Scandinavia, the mid-century era in Italy gave form to furniture pieces defined by quality, functionality, and reliability. The curved seat gives this model a sculptural and striking appearance. The splayed legs made of lacquered brass are very characteristic of the era, adding a modern touch to the body. The black lacquered legs are quite simple, which is a great design choice that contrasts with the colour and soft texture of the upholstery, while also letting it stand out. This lounge chair can seamlessly integrate into a variety of design schemes, enhancing the overall aesthetic and imbuing the space with a touch of timeless Italian elegance.
Like their international contemporaries, Italian designers prized the marriage of form and function, but there are a few key differences that set Italian mid-century design apart. In Italy, good design was generally defined by unique forms, perfect execution, and a strong sense of exclusivity.

The 1950s saw brilliant Italian designers working to create furniture of the highest quality that explored truly modern shapes and innovative techniques. Designers experimented with new materials and construction methods but, crucially, they kept the elegance inherent in Italian design. This sculptural wingback lounge chair is a prime example of form’s marriage to function.
With a clear preoccupation with geometry, this chair’s outstanding architectural frame speaks of the mastery of the designer and of the producer. Still, all the decorative elements are in service of functionality, including the “wings”, the appealing angles of the seat, and the thick seat and back cushions. Furthermore, the back’s inclination is adjustable in three stages, making this model a perfect chair for the ultimate lounging experience. The clearly lined wood frame contrasts beautifully with the upholstery. The padded velvet fabric highlights the shapes and angles, such as the pointed “wings” at the top that add a lot of character. The dark stained wooden frame’s most dominant feature are the ‘V’ shaped legs joined with visible screws. The refined linearity defines the overall aesthetic, with crisp and elegant lines. On the decoration front, the chair isn’t in need of much thanks to the brilliance of the design itself, therefore the sole decorative element remains the design itself.
The design was created in the golden days of Italian mid-century modernism, when Italian design giants like Gio Ponti and Paolo Buffa worked as well. With an outstanding design, quality materials and Italian design elements, this lounge chair is sure to provide comfort and style in any interior.
