This pair of Louis Poulsen produced “Kubuarmatur” or cube lamps, more specifically known as “model 38117” wall lamps are quintessential representations of Danish modern design, characterised by simplicity, functionality, and a distinct minimalist aesthetic. These lamps, with their combination of opal glass shades and black bakelite wall mounts, encapsulate the era's design principles while delivering both form and function.

The name "Kubuarmatur" is derived from the Danish word "kubus," which means cube or square. This nomenclature reflects the lamp's primary design element: a cuboid opal glass shade. The juxtaposition of the white opal glass and black bakelite mounts is a classic example of the contrast and harmony that Danish design often seeks to achieve. Louis Poulsen, the renowned Danish lighting manufacturer, has a rich history of producing iconic designs. Founded in 1874, the company has consistently emphasized craftsmanship and innovative design. The 1960s marked a period of growth and exploration for Louis Poulsen, and these Model 38117 wall lamps exemplify the company's commitment to avant-garde aesthetics. The design of these lamps is credited to K. Jepsen and A.F. Johansen, two talented Danish designers who were known for their contributions to the world of lighting. About the manufacturer:

Louis Poulsen is a Danish lighting manufacturer that was founded in 1874. Louis Poulsen Lighting is represented by subsidiaries, distribution offices and agents around the world.

Among Louis Poulsen's best designers were Arne Jacobsen and Poul Henningsen. In 1874 Ludvig R. Poulsen set up a wine importing business under the name Kjøbenhavns direkte Vin-Import-Kompagni (The Copenhagen Direct Wine Import Company). The firm closed down in 1878. In 1892 Ludvig Poulsen opened his second business, this time selling tools and electrical supplies. In 1896 Ludvig R. Poulsen hired his nephew, Louis Poulsen. Ludvig R. Poulsen died in 1906. His nephew Louis took over the business and, two years later moved the company to Copenhagen to its new location.

In 1914 Louis Poulsen & Co. published its first catalogue – featuring machines and tools. Designer, Poul Henningsen began working together with Louis Poulsen in 1924, with a view to taking part in an international exhibition for decorative art to be held in Paris called "Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs & Industriels Modernes". A competition was held to find qualified participants: Henningsen was one of the winners. Next year, Poul Henningsen's lamps earned Gold medals in this exhibition.

In 1926 Louis Poulsen and Poul Henningsen were awarded a contract to provide lighting for the newly constructed Forum building in Copenhagen using the now-legendary PH lamp with three shades system, and as the saying goes, the rest is history.

Hans Bergström’s designs are just as scarce today as the information available on the Swedish designer, despite his undeniable quality of output. Guided by the mantra, “Light must be white and shine freely,” he designed and produced functional and modern fixtures that were intended to brighten up entire spaces.

The beauty of these stylish lamps lies in the combination of materials, including the accent wooden necks, the brass elements and the scalloped edged shades. The pairing of brass and wood creates an interesting visual effect, where the organic and traditional look of the wood meets the modern look of brass. Swedish lighting manufacturers, like ASEA, were masters of creating designs with great textural variety - as this lovely table lamp shows. The brass elements tie the materials together in a design that is indeed innovative and modern, yet still fresh to the contemporary eye. The beautiful colours and textures of the materials are further emphasised when the light is turned on by the switch on the base. This elegant pair casts an atmospheric light and thus contributes to the warmth of an interior but also fits perfectly on an elegant surface.

This lamp model effortlessly shows off Bergström’s creativity that he always paired with structural precision and material quality. Hans Bergström had a modernist approach based on quality and attention to detail, and was the favourite lighting designer of many fellow architects, among them Bruno Mathsson.‎

Glössner & Co. was a Swedish glass company founded by brothers Karl-Erik and Harry Glössner, active from the 1930s. Known for their decorative glasswork, they produced a range of items including etched and frosted glass, leaded glass windows, and artistic lighting fixtures. Their designs often featured stylised figures, nature motifs, and geometric patterns, all carachteristics found in this ceiling lamp.

Bo Notini was among the most accomplished lighting designers working in Sweden with Glössner & Co.. Notini came from a family of designers, his grandfather Harald and father Gunnar being key figures of Swedish lighting creation. Bo Notini often incorporated etched or sandblasted decoration into understated, elegant forms, in the case of this lamp, they take the form of birds, clouds and raindrops - all elements inspired by nature. These stylised elements are etched on an amber glass shade suspended from a slender brass rod and canopy, creating a light composition. The gently curved sides of the shade soften the simple profile, while the polished brass introduces a subtle metallic counterpoint to the textured glass. When lit, the amber glass diffuses a warm glow that highlights the etched decoration from within. The restrained palette of brass and glass allows the quality of the materials and craftsmanship to remain the focus, resulting in a fixture that is both decorative and highly refined.

This “6942” model is by Swedish designer and sculptor, Harald Notini. He was the artistic leader at Böhlmarks and is represented at the ‘Nationalmuseum’ in Stockholm. Between the 1920s and 1950s, Böhlmarks was a significant player in the Swedish design movement. Harald Notini, after becoming creative director in 1916, drove the company forward, producing what were considered pioneering and distinctive luminaires for the time.

Like many of the decade’s designs, this table lamp masterfully pairs different materials. Notini cleverly combined brass, lacquered metal, and wood to create this distinctive model.
