Ligne Roset is a well-established French furniture manufacturer and distributor. They were originally founded in 1860 in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, by Antoine Roset, with the purpose of manufacturing bentwood for parasols and walking sticks. However, by the end of the 19th century, parasols were out of fashion and Roset began repurposing the wood to instead create chairs. Today, Ligne Roset is still run by the Roset family, directed by Antoine’s great-grandsons Pierre and Michel Roset. The name “Ligne Roset” became the company’s official name in 1959, combining both of its branches Roset and Cinna together under one umbrella.

The ‘689’ model expresses the design philosophy and history of Ligne Roset, with its sleek, slightly curved ladderback - formed by two fine slats and a sturdier top rail to ensure a comfortable backrest - reminiscent of the smooth bentwood productions of the original founder. The ears of the backrest extend well beyond the top rail, elongating the overall impression and giving the chair its refined appearance. The chairs also play with symmetry and geometry, with perfect clean lines allowing for a neat and functional look. The off-white upholstered seats complement the beautiful black lacquered wood and provide ample comfort, making this an ideal and impressive set of chairs. The contrasting colours also add a harmonious depth to the overall aesthetic of the set. ‎The 1950s in France marked a flourishing period for modernist design, showcasing the artistry of functional forms and skilled craftsmanship. Furniture from this era embraced clean lines, minimal ornamentation, and leaned on the honesty of materials to reflect the post-war ethos of practicality and renewal.

This set of four chairs epitomises the restrained elegance of modernism and robust utility. Their angular frames crafted with meticulous precision is a nod to the geometric simplicity championed by designers of the time. The dark stain enhances the chairs’ striking bodies by highlighting the natural grain of the wood, bringing a sense of depth and richness to the design. The ‘spinning chair’, this historic type of seating has had numerous modern interpretations across Europe, however, most preserved the main functional characteristics: solid wood, enduring, high quality craftsmanship, a tall, straight back for good posture and freedom of movement.

The art of spinning yarn is thousands of years old, but the spinning wheel as we know it is estimated to have arrived in Europe around the middle of the 13th century and along with it came the three or four-legged spinning chair. The backs were often hand carved with various motifs or fantasy creatures making each one unique and individual. As these oak chairs show, the Modernist movement influenced the traditional design by removing most of the intricate decorative elements, and substituting them with a more streamlined structure. The carved high backs and octagonal seats are supported by so-called bobbin style legs. Bobbin turning was a type of ornament consisting of a series of small knobs resembling spools, or bobbins. The individual knobs are less separated and instead flow into each other in a more modernist manner. They stand out against the straight lines of the seats and backs, resulting in an eye-catching look. Their shape is further enhanced by the oak’s natural pattern with circles and curved variations.
