A Pair of Art Deco Armchairs, Europe ca 1930s (sold)
Characterised by bold geometric shapes, rich materials, and luxurious aesthetics, Art Deco transformed the way we perceive interior spaces. The movement left an indelible mark on the world of furniture design. Just like literature, art, and architecture, the story of furniture serves as an engaging narrative that holds up a mirror to society’s transformation.
Like club chairs, armchairs - perhaps the most quintessential pieces of furniture - were embraced during the Art Deco era for their comfort and timeless appeal. They were favoured in upscale clubs and lounges across Europe, providing an inviting haven for relaxation and socialising. These chairs symbolise an era of sophistication and glamour, and their lasting popularity is a testament to the allure of Art Deco design. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the geometric shape of this pair is highlighted by the beautiful material choices. The chairs feature fully upholstered bodies, embracing the era’s ruling principle of luxurious comfort without sacrificing style. The wooden accents on the armrests are a gentle visual contrast to the textile, while also providing a sense of stability and durability, ensuring that this pair will keep standing the test of time. The duality of the materials and colour schemes create an elegant, enticing, and beautiful design. This design is a classic that goes beyond trends, a product of the desire to showcase impeccable craftsmanship and a stylish aesthetic, without compromising the quality of production or materials.
To this day Art Deco, with its unmistakable glamour and stylish functionality, is still appreciated and mimicked in modern furniture designs for its distinctive charm and touch of luxury.

Art Deco seating from the first half of the 20th century brought together strong geometry, rich materials and interesting forms. Upholstered armchairs were particularly suited to this approach, as their larger surfaces could be shaped into bold silhouettes and contrasted with decorative wooden elements. This pair combines dark green upholstery with sweeping walnut-veneered details, creating a design in which wood becomes as visually important as the upholstered body.
The armchairs have substantial, slightly inclined backrests, giving them generous and comfortable proportions. Each backrest is divided into three vertical upholstered sections with a softly scalloped upper edge, adding definition to the broad surface and drawing the eye upward. The dark green upholstery continues across the seats, backs and side panels, giving the bodies a consistent colour and texture. The walnut veneer provides a striking contrast and forms a distinctive feature of the design. Large curved sections run along either side of each chair, forming part of the armrests before continuing downward towards the floor. Their continuous rounded shape complements the upholstered sides and gives the chairs a strong profile from every angle. At the same time, the wood creates gaps in the size, balancing the strong volume of the upholstered sections. The reddish-brown tone and visible grain of the walnut stand out against the muted green fabric, while the polished surface catches the light along each curve. Finally, short rectangular wooden feet support the front of the seats, while the back one mirror the curve of the armrests, tying the look together.
What makes these armchairs particularly appealing is the way the walnut veneer transforms an upholstered chair into a much more individual Art Deco design. Used together in a living room, library or conversation area, they offer both comfortable seating and the rich material character associated with European furniture at its best.

The European perspective on cabinetmaking is exceptional, and wood was an omnipresent material in mid-century modernism. This sumptuous rounded armchair features the immediately recognisable touches of Modernism: excellent materials, craftsmanship, and elegantly curved shapes.
This armchair holds all the characteristics that define Berga Möbler’s style, from the playful softness, to the organic sophistication. The chair is slightly tilted backwards by the tapered front legs. The curved and rounded backrest and armrests are a few elements that define the elegance of the chair. Slightly inclined towards the backrest, the armrests provide an excellent seating experience, making the chair a wonderful choice for any contemporary living space. Not only this, but the back is tufted with two large buttons that give the pieces a pleasant and welcoming appearance. The upholstery's texture adds to the visual appeal. It enhances the tactile experience, making it a delight to sit on. The frame is constructed from high-quality wood, ensuring durability and sturdiness. Furthermore, apart from being structurally integral, the legs add a touch of mid-century modern flair with their outward bend and smooth finish. The design of this chair possesses an elegant homely curviness, an aesthetic balance that is only seemingly easy to achieve, but this armchair exudes it.
Crafted with precision and finished with attention to detail and care for the aesthetic dimension, this armchair stands the test of time thanks to both its visual and material quality.

Airborne was founded in France by Charles Bernard in 1951 and became known for a wide range of modern seating designs. By the 1970s, the company was producing furniture that explored modularity and new approaches to upholstered seating, allowing individual elements to be combined into larger arrangements. The “Patate” was designed as an ensemble of individual chair, corner and pouf units, with different configurations that could be created from them. This six-piece example captures that versatility.
There is a great balance in the execution of this sofa, achieved through the clever modular design and the continuous curves of its individual elements. Each module has a deep seat and a broad backrest that opens outward toward the upper edge, giving the seating an inviting, enveloping shape. Stitched lines radiate across the backrests and converge toward the seats, creating folds in the upholstery and emphasising the rounded construction. The thick seat cushions have a relaxed feel, with gathered fabric around their edges giving them a soft and rich appearance. The entire sofa is upholstered in soft brown fabric, in which the texture brings out different shades as light moves across the folds and curved surfaces. The six elements include straight seating modules and a rounded corner section, allowing the sofa to form the large curved arrangement shown or to be reorganised according to the space it occupies. This adaptability was fundamental to the original “Patate” system, and it maintains its functionality today.
The “Patate” represents the relaxed and increasingly informal approach to seating that made modular sofas such a distinctive part of 1970s interiors. Its six separate elements allow the composition to change with the space, while the deep seats make it particularly suited to lounging and conversation. As a piece of Airborne history, the “Patate” remains a distinctive example of French furniture from the 1970s.

European seating design from the 1940s often sits at the intersection between late Art Deco and the early stages of modernism. While earlier decades favoured more elaborate ornamentation, this period saw a gradual simplification of form, with designers focusing more on proportion, silhouette, and comfort.
This pair of armchairs follow that direction through their restrained yet carefully shaped form. From the rounded backs, to the tapered wooden legs, the elements reflect both the elegance of Art Deco and a move toward more practical, everyday use. In these armchairs, this is evident in the pronounced curve of the wooden arms that define the overall look. Since the arms create a hollow form, the beautiful upholstery is visible from the sides as well, further complementing the gentle curvature. The upholstery, in a deep green tone, gives the pair its visual identity, introducing both colour and a soft texture that contrasts with the sleek and slender wooden legs below. Each chair stands on slender legs that echo the solid construction and frame the upholstered body without distracting from it.
This pair of armchairs exemplifies a tradition of European seating that values both comfort and design, making them a perfect choice for interiors that appreciate material honesty and functional refinement. The pairing of materials give them a distinctive but versatile presence, whether placed in a living room, study, or relaxed seating area.

The mid-20th century saw brilliant European designers working to create furniture that explored modern shapes and forms with innovative techniques, while still maintaining the highest level of quality. Designers experimented with new materials and construction methods, resulting in a harmonious blend of minimalism, organic shapes, and understated elegance. This sculptural wingback armchair is a prime example of European designers' emphasis on beauty and simplicity.
The wingback style is one of the most recognizable forms in European upholstered furniture, with a history dating back to seventeenth-century England. Its characteristic high back and projecting side wings were originally developed to shelter the sitter from drafts and retain warmth near a fireplace. In the case of this piece, the tall back rises from the deep seat, gently widening toward the top before terminating in two rounded wings that curve forward around the sitter. This gives the upper section an enveloping quality, echoed below by the padded armrests that project outward on either side. The seat is generous and cushioned, with softly rounded edges. The entire body is covered in brown upholstery, emphasising the tactile quality of the chair with the soft, cosy material. To complete the design, under this substantial upholstered volume, four short tapered wooden legs provide a simple foundation and lift the body just above the floor, splayed to ensure the stability of the armchair.
The generous seat, high back and embracing wings give the chair a sense of comfort and privacy. Its warm brown upholstery makes the design feel inviting, while the strong silhouette allows it to stand confidently in a space. Positioned beside a fireplace, in a reading corner or alongside a floor lamp, it creates an intimate place to sit while bringing the unmistakable tradition into the twentieth century.

This set was crafted during the early 20th century, a time when the Art Deco and Modernist movements were reshaping the design world. These dining chairs reflect a period rooted in the beauty of geometry, high-quality materials, and elegant aesthetics. An emphasis on clean lines, unique adornments, and fine craftsmanship was paramount and can be observed in this set.
The chairs are made from solid wood in a rich, dark stain that accentuates the natural grain to create subtle warmth and depth. Adding to their appeal are the geometric backrests, which provide firm support and a subtle architectural detail to the design. The backrests’ clean, symmetrical lines reflect the simple, yet timeless aesthetics of the time. The carved elements further showcase the Art Deco interest in geometric adornments and sophisticaton, reminding of a folding fan. While dining chairs are generally more utilitarian types of seating, this set of six still manages to look cosy and warm thanks to the upholstered seats. The fabric is not only elegant, it also accentuates the luxurious look of the wood. The choice of materials highlights the attention given to both function and form, by creating visual and textural interest. The rectangular, slim legs are connected by thin stretchers, to create a sleek structure while not abandoning sturdiness.
This set exemplifies the Art Deco commitment to balancing utility with grace. The sculptural form and enduring materiality allow the chairs to serve as both practical furniture and a statement of design history. Nearly a century after their creation, they remain a timeless expression of European craftsmanship and the enduring modernity of the Art Deco movement.

The mid-20th century saw brilliant Danish designers and cabinetmakers working to create furniture of the highest quality that explored modern shapes and forms. Skilled cabinetmakers produced quality furniture in relatively small quantities, while architects and designers increasingly worked with them to refine established furniture types and give greater attention to construction.
This Danish armchair is built from a clearly exposed wooden frame, with upholstered elements forming the seat and backrest. The sides are particularly distinctive: beneath each armrest, three horizontal rails span the distance of the sides, creating an open, ladder-like structure. The construction uses both wood and negative space to create the appearance of enveloping arms that contribute to the chair’s unique look. At the same time, this horizontal arrangement keeps the sides considerably lighter than they would appear as solid panels. Four straight legs support the body, continuing upward to form the supports for the armrests. While the sides create the visual impact, the upholstered seat and back ensure comfort. The muted upholstery contrasts with the warm wood without obscuring any of the chair’s structural elements. Each element of this piece comes together to give a simple chair a surprisingly substantial framework.
The exposed joints, repeated side rails and separation marriage of materials make the chair immediately charming. Rather than hiding its frame, the design uses the frame itself as its principal visual feature - an approach consistent with the attention to workmanship and material construction found within the Danish cabinetmaking tradition.

In an era marked by unprecedented cultural dynamism and bold artistic expression, the Art Deco movement emerged as a testament to modernity and sophistication. This period witnessed the creation of exquisite furniture pieces that epitomised the union of form and function, with this pair of armchairs standing out as a prime example.
In line with the Art Deco movement during which they were designed and manufactured, these chairs illustrate the bold, rich and luxurious aesthetic of the era. Before giving way to mid-century modernism and its focus on function over form, Art Deco pieces coupled geometry and craftsmanship to arrive as elegantly impressive additions to the era’s interiors. The upholstery is soft but controlled, with clean planes and subtle curves rather than excess padding. The seats are deep and inviting, designed for practical use, while the proportions remain compact enough to feel composed in a room. The wooden elements frame the upholstery and emphasise the chair’s structure, reinforcing its Art Deco character. Every detail works together, from the block-like legs to the precise transitions between wood and fabric, creating a chair model that feels deliberate, balanced, and quietly strong.

The mid-20th century was a transformative era for design throughout Europe. Around this period, furniture began blending the streamlined elegance of modernism with the inviting charm of skilled craftsmanship. This period celebrated functionality, comfort, and organic forms by creating pieces that were as practical as they were beautiful, like this armchair.
Works from this era embraced soft curves and beautiful textures, perfectly showcased by this piece. This armchair encapsulates the mid-century modern ethos, standing as a testament of the era’s focus on human-centred design and timeless versatility. The piece features harmonious, seamless curves, breaking the classic angularity of most armchairs, while evoking natural fluidity, through material and colour. The frame is quite distinctive even beyond its curved arms. The shape and construction show the signs of a master cabinetmaker as the chair has an almost sculptural look. The backrest is visually “unattached” to the seat which creates an impression of weightlessness. The piece has an overall flow to it which adds to the visual interest. The light fabric adds to the stylish look as well, as it highlights the wood’s gorgeous colour and pattern. European designers often believed that a chair should always be comfortable to sit on and beautiful to look at from all sides and angles and this piece is evidence of that.
Unlike designs from outside the continent, European furniture wasn’t flashy but designed to be well-made and to fit a warm, comfortable and welcoming home. As this armchair exemplifies, blending functionality, good quality natural materials and organic colours with excellent craftsmanship is the key to the success of modern design.

Art Deco was an era-defining movement in furniture making. These chairs were created during an age of aesthetic creativity and instantly recognisable design. As these armchairs show, European furniture designers’ artistic approach was anchored by characteristic Art Deco refinement, expressed through graceful forms and traditional methods. Though Art Deco furniture took many different forms across Europe, shape, material and craftsmanship remained central to its character, with curved wooden structures providing some of the period’s most expressive seating designs.
This pair immediately catches the eye with its bold outline, defined by the pronounced curve of the wooden arms. The arms create a hollow form, allowing the beautiful upholstery to remain visible from the sides while further complementing the gentle curvature. Each arm sweeps forward before curving down and around the lower body of the chair, creating a continuous wooden structure that frames the upholstery. The walnut veneers beautiful grain and colour variation stand out thanks to the upholstery’s restrained, elegant beige colour. To keep the visual balance, the backs feature straighter lines, contrasting with the flowing shape of the side structures. The tightly upholstered seats and backs, while adding comfort and cosiness to the design, do not take attention away from the wood. The seats have softly rounded fronts, while the tall backrests are slightly inclined and finished with two subtle tufted buttons. The combination of upholstered bodies and open wooden sides creates a particularly effective contrast between volumes. The obvious quality of the craftsmanship complements the design through the choice of materials, techniques and well-thought-out details, with the continuous curves giving the chairs their distinctive streamlined appearance.
Created during an age of innovation in materials, shapes and techniques, these chairs showcase how European furniture designers coupled geometry and craftsmanship to create elegantly impressive additions to their interiors. Perfect for those looking to add some vintage character to a space, the pair can bring warmth and a distinctive presence to a living room or conversation area.
