Adjustable Black Lacquered Metal Saucer Wall Light by Maison Arlus, France ca 1950s (sold)
Maison Arlus is a French lighting design company that was founded in the early 20th century by Robert and Jean Arlus. The company quickly gained recognition for its innovative and stylish lighting fixtures, which were characterised by their use of high-quality materials and their focus on functionality.
Maison Arlus became particularly well-known for its use of metal and brass in its designs, as can be seen with this wall lamp. The main decorative elements are placed around the functional parts, namely the Perspex shade. This type of material ensures the light is diffused gently, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere, while the sleek look of the black metal adds a touch of chromatic and textural contrast. A modern look is achieved by the sleek execution of the black lacquered saucer-like silhouette. Despite being made of metal, the body appears light thanks to the brass structure connecting to the back plate. This light model continues to embody the qualities of mid-century modernism that has made it one of the most sought after design movements to this day. The clean lines and understated look further ensure that it maintains its relevance and beauty for decades to come, and allows the piece to stand out and complement any space.
Over the years, Maison Arlus collaborated with a number of notable designers, including Jacques Biny, Pierre Guariche, and Michel Buffet, and continued to produce a wide range of lighting fixtures that were both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Today, many of Maison Arlus's vintage designs are highly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts.

This striking set of wall lamps, designed by Rolf Krüger and Dieter Witte, highlight the refined innovation of 20th century German design. Crafted in lacquered aluminium, each lamp showcases a minimalist aesthetic that merges industrial functionality with sculptural elegance.
These lamps were conceived during a period of dynamic experimentation in German design, where materials like aluminium were celebrated for their lightness and modern appeal. The shape of the lamps speaks to the geometric influence of the Bauhaus and mid-century modernism, and highlights the uniqueness of the set. The form is composed of a boxy body, visually framed by two triangular elements on the top and bottom. These elements showcase the white background painted to better reflect the light emitted inside the bodies. The lacquered finish adds a sophisticated touch, lending the fixtures a sleek, contemporary presence that remains timeless. Whether arranged in a linear sequence or displayed asymmetrically, the trio creates a versatile and cohesive lighting solution for a variety of interiors. Furthermore, the harmonious pairing of black and white endures as a hallmark of sophistication, blending seamlessly into contemporary design aesthetics.
Rolf Krüger and Dieter Witte, both known for their contributions to lighting and industrial design, brought a shared vision to these wall lamps — one that balances modernist restraint with expressive detail. As a set, they function as sources of light but also serve as sculptural elements that enhance the architectural character of any space. These lamps are a testament to the enduring legacy of German modernism in the decorative arts.
