Paavo Tynell is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in Finnish lighting design. Trained as a metalworker, he co-founded Taito Oy in 1918 and spent decades developing fixtures that combined technical innovation with a distinctly elegant sense of form. His work helped define the identity of Nordic lighting during the twentieth century, and his collaborations with manufacturers such as Idman produced some of the most celebrated designs of the period.

Tynell became particularly known for his ability to soften modernist forms through delicate details, carefully considered materials, and an exceptional understanding of how light interacts with a space. Model “1076” demonstrates his talent  through its striking combination of geometry and atmosphere. The fixture consists of a broad circular shade mounted to the ceiling, its pleated fabric surface radiates outward from a central brass fitting. The pleating creates a fan-like effect across the underside, transforming the shade into a sculptural element even when unlit. A narrow band around the perimeter defines the circular outline with precision, while the brass centre introduces a decorative accent without distracting from the purity of the form. When illuminated, the fabric diffuses the light evenly across the entire surface, producing a warm glow that accentuates the rhythmic folds and enhances the floating appearance of the fixture.

This design reflects Tynell's talent for elevating functional lighting through craftsmanship and material sensitivity. Rather than relying on complexity, the fixture achieves its presence through scale, proportion, and the interplay between light and texture. The result is a ceiling lamp that feels simultaneously architectural and atmospheric, embodying the refinement that made Finnish lighting design internationally admired during the post-war era.
