Pair of Toni Zuccheri "Scorzé" Wall Lamps for Venini, Italy 1960s (sold)

Pair of Toni Zuccheri "Scorzé" Wall Lamps for Venini, Italy 1960s (sold)
Toni Zuccheri was an Italian architect, painter and designer, whose work sits at the intersection of craftsmanship and experimentation. He developed a deep sensitivity to glass as both a functional and expressive medium. Throughout the 1960s, in his early twenties, Zuccheri collaborated with some of Italy’s leading manufacturers, including Venini, as well as with other iconic designers of the period, such as Geo Ponti. He pushed the limits of glass-making techniques to create objects that integrated sculptural form with atmospheric light.
This pair of wall lights reflect Zuccheri’s signature approach to texture and form. Each piece is made of thick, moulded glass that appears almost fluid, its surface rippling with irregular folds and undulations. The glass diffuses light in a way that is both gentle and practical, creating a glow that shifts across the surface. When turned on, the pieces reveal subtle variations in tone and depth, recalling the organic qualities of ice or flowing water. The sculptural bodies are secured by small metal screws that add an understated industrial contrast to the glass’s organic look. Despite their rather simple materials, the fixtures command presence through their tactile complexity and the play of light and shadow they produce. Zuccheri’s ability to manipulate glass beyond its rigid form gives each lamp an individual, hand-made character.
This pair exemplifies the expressive possibilities of Italian glass design in the mid-20th century. More than functional objects, they serve as luminous reliefs, sculptures that animate the wall with texture and reflection. They embody Zuccheri’s belief that light could be both a material and an emotion, revealing the artistic depth that defines his contribution to postwar Italian design.

French lighting manufacturer Lunel became known for producing elegant modernist fixtures that balanced sculptural form with functional clarity. Collaborating with designers such as René Mathieu, the company developed fixtures that combined elegant engineering with sculptural forms, often introducing articulated arms and highly distinctive shades that transformed functional lighting into expressive design objects.
This wall lamp reflects that direction through its minimalist construction and carefully balanced proportions. A long, slender arm projects confidently from the wall to hold a striking diabolo-shaped shade, formed by two opposing cones joined by a patinated brass collar to create an hourglass-like profile that immediately draws attention. Its light, pale surface contrasts sharply against the darker metal structure, while the black ring detail at the centre visually ties the shade back to the frame below. The articulated arm allows the lamp to be adjusted with ease, extending its functionality while enhancing its visual appeal. At the same time, the small wooden detail showcases the precision and attention poured into every part of this piece.
The combination of adjustable construction and sculptural form reflects the spirit of French mid-century lighting at its best. Many of the pieces produced by Maison Lunel borrow the same sober and refined design vocabulary, which makes them highly sought after by collectors and design aficionados alike.
