Alain Richard (1926–2017) was a French furniture and interior designer who graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in 1949, where he studied under René Gabriel. He established his own agency in 1952 and became part of a generation of French designers developing furniture for serial production during the post-war period. His work included furniture for Meubles TV and lighting for Disderot, alongside increasingly large interior and architectural projects. This model “704” armchair from the 1960s shows his interest in clean construction, contrasting materials, and furniture designed around clear functional elements.

Model “704” combines a compact upholstered seat and backrest with exposed wood and metal elements. The thick seat cushion has a rectangular shape with softly rounded corners, while the backrest is slightly inclined to provide a comfortable sitting position. The piece is upholstered in a textured olive-green fabric that gives the chair a warm, tactile appearance. The armrests feature padded horizontal sections that appear almost suspended on either side of the seat. This beautiful chair design was crafted by French duo Audoux-Minet. Rosello Paris was a French furniture house active through much of the twentieth century, starting in 1928. Their models draw on geometry and style associated with Art Deco furniture. This pair from the 1970s draws inspiration from the Art Deco period in an expressive direction, with large circular armrests becoming the central architectural element of the chairs.

The armchairs feature tall upholstered backs that rise in a gentle curve above deep, generously cushioned seats. Their off-white mohair gives the broad surface a soft, elegant appearance, with restrained piping following the outer edges and emphasising the height of the backrests. Against this pale upholstery, the dark wooden frames are particularly striking. Each armrest takes the form of a circle, sweeping upward from the front leg, around the side of the seat and back toward the rear structure. The generous diameter of these loops give the chairs their unmistakable profile, while the open centres keep the wooden elements visually light. At floor level, the circular forms continue into short curved feet and connecting members, creating arcs around the upholstered body. The company Votre Maison is one that has left an indelible mark on the history of French design. The 'José' armchair, designed by Robert Guillerme along with his sales partner Jacques Chambron, and manufactured in Emile Dariosecq’s workshop, was created at Votre Maison during the 1970s.

Made of high-quality oak with a beautiful sandy fabric, this ‘José’ armchair is truly eye catching. The carefully carved geometrical patterns on the backrest are symmetrically arranged, with a shape reminiscent of four leaf clovers, making the chair an interesting and aesthetically pleasing sight from the back as well. The light fabric works beautifully with the warm brown wooden structure of the chair. About the designer:

Robert Guillerme graduated in 1934 from the École Boule where he excelled in architecture and furniture design. After the Second World War he moved to Lille, in the north of France, where he decorated homes and designed furniture for the well regarded Rogier workshops. 

In 1948, Guillerme was joined by his long-time friend, decorator Jacques Chambron in Lille. The following year Guillerme and Chambron met master cabinet maker Émile Dariosecq, owner of a woodworking shop and the company Votre Maison was born. Together, they defined and imposed a new furniture concept. Thanks to their distinctive creativity, originality, and quality, the Votre Maison quickly became well-known. 

The Votre Maison marked the history of French design. Guillerme drew the furniture designs while Chambron played the part of salesman, welcoming and advising clients. The power duo was complemented by Dariosecq, whose workshop took charge of the manufacturing. Together, they defined new furnishings concepts. Well-crafted chair back, polished wood and thick cushions make the reputation of their armchairs and sofas. Votre Maison continued to produce furniture right into the Twentieth Century, with Jacques’ son Hervé Chambron, a designer and graduate of the Ecole Boulle, having taken the reins in 1983.

Born in 1890 in France, René Gabriel was one of the leading figures of the modernist movement in Paris. From 1923 to 1950, he presented an innovative body of work, offering new vision on the way people could live in the 20th century. He became widely recognised for developing practical, well-made furniture intended for the reconstruction period following the Second World War. Appointed president of the Société des Artistes Décorateurs (SAD) at the Liberation, he steered French decoration towards more economical productions, with sharp lines, efficient joinery, and a preference for the authenticity of local woods over imported species.

Gabriel distinguished himself through the extreme simplicity and sturdiness of his designs, where a Cartesian aesthetic streamlined production. His work rejected unnecessary ornament in favour of robust construction, honest materials, and economical forms that could be produced efficiently without compromising quality. The design of this set of chairs are ingeniously functional and have a well-thought-out structure, crafted from oak. The chairs are built from a series of straightforward elements that work together with remarkable precision. Airborne was founded in France by Charles Bernard in 1951 and became known for a wide range of modern seating designs. By the 1970s, the company was producing furniture that explored modularity and new approaches to upholstered seating, allowing individual elements to be combined into larger arrangements. The “Patate” was designed as an ensemble of individual chair, corner and pouf units, with different configurations that could be created from them. This six-piece example captures that versatility.

There is a great balance in the execution of this sofa, achieved through the clever modular design and the continuous curves of its individual elements. Each module has a deep seat and a broad backrest that opens outward toward the upper edge, giving the seating an inviting, enveloping shape. Stitched lines radiate across the backrests and converge toward the seats, creating folds in the upholstery and emphasising the rounded construction. The thick seat cushions have a relaxed feel, with gathered fabric around their edges giving them a soft and rich appearance. The entire sofa is upholstered in soft brown fabric, in which the texture brings out different shades as light moves across the folds and curved surfaces. The six elements include straight seating modules and a rounded corner section, allowing the sofa to form the large curved arrangement shown or to be reorganised according to the space it occupies. This adaptability was fundamental to the original “Patate” system, and it maintains its functionality today.

The “Patate” represents the relaxed and increasingly informal approach to seating that made modular sofas such a distinctive part of 1970s interiors.
