This beautiful set of stools are crafted in the manner of French design duo Audoux-Minet. Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet worked together during the mid-20th century. The duo are known for their innovative use of natural, sustainable materials, including rope, wicker, and bamboo. Their work was heavily influenced by the Modernist movement, which sought to create functional and streamlined designs that were accessible to a wider audience.

Like in Scandinavia, there was an early emphasis on wood in most European mid-century design as it connected everyday objects to nature. This set of three stools is a perfect example of this sentiment, and the visual benefits of an understated, organic design. The high quality woven wicker makes these stools an outstanding example of woven furniture. They feature a fairly traditional shape with rounded edges and an airy feel. The straightforward shape highlights the understated beauty of the materials, allowing the beautiful woven pattern and the grain of the wood to stand out. The seats are set on three splayed club feet, stained in a rich colour lending a more dramatic presence to the set. The tripod base is ideal for ensuring the sturdiness needed for a classic piece of furniture made to withstand the passage of time. This elegant armchair pair by Dutch designer, Bas Van Pelt is a classically luxe model with a level of craftsmanship that’s immediately visible to any eye. The construction of this rare 1940s design is simple at its core, but thanks to the details, it is a unique representation of early Dutch modernism.

While Bas Van Pelt's creative work was primarily influenced by the 1920s straight lines dominated by The Hague School, this model is the result of his more mature design era, which was primarily dominated by natural materials and more curvature. While made of solid wood and wicker, these armchairs have an open feel thanks to the airy arrangement of the arms and legs. The curved lines of the armrests are beautifully crafted and follow the raised seat’s angle. The curves nicely contrast with the straight lines of the frame, keeping it from appearing too strict. Apart from the expert woodwork, the upholstered seats stand out as well. The fabric is tightly fitted within the frame, and the seat’s thick shape is an especially pleasing element that offers plenty of comfort both figuratively and literally. The woven wicker backs further enhance the visual interest and thus allow the chairs to stand out. The block legs blend seamlessly into the back and form a gentle angle. Thanks to the well-chosen proportions and materials, this armchair pair provides great comfort. This model can be easily used as an accent thanks to the characteristic details, but can also complement a wide variety of interior styles with its refined and elegant style.

Bas van Pelt’s progressive designs were, in many ways, ahead of his era. The Dordrecht-born designer’s furniture models are quite rare, thus a few are preserved in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam for modern art, contemporary art, and design.

The chairs are constructed from solid wood elements, their rectilinear frames defined by broad square-section legs connected by robust stretchers that emphasize stability and craftsmanship. The armrests are flat, yet carved ergonomically, and they extend in a clean horizontal line, framing the seat. The distinctive backrests consist of solid triangular wooden panels with a blunted upper corner and a gently carved details, introducing a sculptural quality that contrasts with the openness of the surrounding frame. Below, hand-woven wicker panels form both the back support and seat, their tightly woven texture softening the angular construction and adding warmth to the composition. This remarkable armchair was designed by German artist, Willi Ohler. The so-called “Worpsweder” either denote chairs made at the Worpsweder Kunsthütten (Worpsweder arts huts) in Germany, or a specific style of German chairs with solid wood frames, broad armrests, often from tall wood, with woven seats and backs. This piece features all of those characteristics.

Crafted during a time when movements like Modernism were reshaping design worldwide, this early 20th-century armchair reflect a transitional style rooted in both simplicity and elegance. This era emphasises clean lines, unique shapes, and high-quality craftsmanship to achieve timeless pieces like this one. The honey-toned wood highlights the warm patina that has developed over decades. The softly sculpted armrests framing the chair bring both elegance and ergonomic comfort to the overall form. Woven wicker is the main highlight of the piece. The material is used to construct the seat and tall backrest. Worpswede in Lower Saxony is famous nationwide for its long tradition as an artists' colony. Nowadays, about 130 artists and craftsmen and women live there permanently. The artists who created the so called "Worpsweder Kuentlerkolonie" were looking for the simple and original in art and life. The traditional reed and rush woven chairs of this region were greatly appreciated by the artists of the colony, and some of them were still produced around 1900-1920. They have become collectors’ pieces thanks to the craftsmanship that went into each chair’s creation.
