This hanging lamp, produced in the 1950s, combines the functional character associated with Scandinavian mid-century lighting with an unusually expressive metal construction.

The lamp has a striking composition built from two slender brass stems that descend vertically before terminating into two dark conical metal shades angled upward and outward on either side of the central structure. Above them, a broad metal sheet extends horizontally, creating a striking contrast with the narrow vertical supports. The sheet has a gently curved profile, with its outer edges lifting upward. These lamps have an eye-catching rounded shape, with the edges just as soft as the light they diffuse. Each shade is formed entirely from opal glass, widening gently toward the ceiling before curving inward around the lower opening. The smooth transition between these rounded surfaces gives the shades a compact, almost bowl-like profile, while the opaque white glass keeps the form visually uniform. The use of opal glass is central to the design. When illuminated, it softens and disperses the light across the entire shade, producing a warm and balanced glow while concealing the light source within. Thanks to the concealed ceiling holders, the lamps are flush-mounted without any prominent exposed parts other than the opal glass shades. Hans Bergström was one of Sweden’s foremost lighting designers of the twentieth century. Trained as an architect and designer, he founded Ateljé Lyktan in 1934 and also created lighting for ASEA during the 1940s. His work combined carefully selected materials with simple, well-proportioned forms, with particular attention given to the quality and distribution of light. Model “E1149” was designed in the late 1940s and examples are documented with both the ASEA Belysning mark and the engraved model number.

The beauty of this table lamp lies in its simple combination of wood, brass and fabric. The central stem is made of fluted stained wood and has a tapered shape, with the narrow vertical grooves adding texture to its surface. The warm colour of the wood contrasts with the circular brass base below, which has a low, slightly raised profile and gives the lamp a stable foundation. The pairing of wood and brass creates an interesting visual effect, where the organic and traditional character of the wood meets the more polished appearance of the metal. A broad cylindrical fabric shade completes the design and balances the narrow stem with its generous horizontal shape. After training as both a carpenter and architect, he founded his own company in Markaryd in 1951, where he developed lighting that softened the harsher qualities of electric illumination through carefully designed shades, natural materials and restrained forms. Model “G43” reflects this approach through a particularly light and minimal construction.

The lamp is constructed around a slender white lacquered metal frame, creating a clear vertical axis that gives the piece a light presence. Three thin metal rods create the better part of the stem, spreading outward at the base, each ending in a small rounded foot, while their narrow proportions keep the structure visually unobtrusive. The stem is interrupted by two sections wrapped in brown leather, introducing warmth and texture to the otherwise precise metal construction. A large conical fabric shade sits at the top, its broad proportions creating a strong contrast with the exceptionally slender frame below. The shade becomes the visual volume of the design and filters the light through its fabric surface, producing a soft, warm glow. The simple triangular profile of the shade is balanced by the three-legged base, giving the lamp a clear sense of proportion despite the minimal structure.

The “G43” is a particularly good example of Jakobsson’s ability to give simple lighting a distinct identity through proportion and material. This chandelier is constructed from an elegant metal frame with five arms arranged symmetrically around the centre. Long cords descend from the upper section before flowing outward to support the individual light points, creating an open structure with a strong vertical rhythm. Each brass arm terminates in a dark conical shade holder that continues into a tapered fabric shade. The contrast between the metal and the broad shades gives the lamp much of its character. The shades widen towards their open upper edges and are angled slightly outward, forming a flower-like arrangement around the centre. The opal glass that constructs the shades softens the light into a warm glow that has the power to balance the sharper quality of the dark metal elements. Above, through a simple black canopy, twisted cords ensure stability while giving the chandelier a light appearance despite its size. The symmetrical arrangement keeps the five shades separated, distributing the light evenly around the fixture.

Erik Gunnar Asplund is celebrated as the godfather of functionalist design in Sweden. His meticulous attention to detail and penchant for marrying form with function is evident in this wall lamp.

This model emphasises geometric simplicity and clarity of form. The “GA9” appears to be inspired by a droplet or floating jellyfish. The mouth blown glass with bubbles creates an intricate play between light and shadow, giving the appearance of light travelling through water. The construction of this model is ingenious, with a bent arm holding the socket in the centre of the luminaire, and another arm supporting the shade. The black metal bends organically into a sinuous form, while the back-plate has a square shape. Pairing the geometric elements with the more organic ones shows Asplund’s great eye for design that was well ahead of his time. The glass shade has a faint violet tone, visible when the light is turned off. The atmospheric glow makes sure to enhance its surroundings, which is the most basic and fundamental of all lighting principles.
