Paavo Tynell is regarded as one of the most influential voices in Finnish lighting. As co-founder and artistic director of Taito, he shaped a new idea of domestic illumination. He softened industrial light and made it atmospheric. His work in the 1930s directly shows this approach. Tynell used gentle profiles, modest scale, and materials that supported calm, diffused light. These early Taito models remain highly regarded today for their modern sensibility, mixed with an extensive use of glass and brass as material.

The model "1612" hanging lamp makes this approach clearly visible. Featuring a stepped opal glass shade, this lamp creates a beautifully soft glow. The main point of visual interest is the sculptural glass shade suspended from a slender stem, lending the piece a subtle architectural character.  The opal glass is formed into three gradual tiers that combine strong edges with delicate curves.
