Hans-Agne Jakobsson made a significant mark on the design world during the 20th century, particularly through his exploration of minimalist aesthetics and innovative lighting solutions. As these ‘Sonata’ wall lamps showcase, the Swedish designer mastered both the direction and colour of his lighting designs.
These wall lamps have all the characteristics Jakobsson was famous for: they are elegant and stylish, and while the design allows them to be large and shiny, they never become tacky. With each brass arm holding a tinted glass shade, these lamps clearly show the Swedish designer’s studies in architecture, with beautiful geometric forms and symmetry dominating the frames. The structural design of this pair is reminiscent of a torch, or more-so a candelabra, highlighting the pair’s great proportions. When lit, they create an exceptionally atmospheric light, giving the brass a vivid colour. The tinted glass shades are transparent, letting the brass and light bulbs shine, further enhancing the torch-like look. The 1960s were defined by leading Swedish designers’ sleek and innovative modernist designs that became the trademark style in Scandinavian Modern lighting - the prowess of Jakobsson evident as these models stand as statement pieces in a room. Since the two materials - brass and tinted glass - dictate the appearance of the wall lamps, much attention was paid to their quality and to the craftsmanship that united them in their cylindrical shapes.
Sconces are a timeless type of lighting fixture that can easily elevate their surroundings. These fixtures never go out of style, and have been in use for centuries for good reason. These ‘Sonata’, or ‘V169-5’, models were produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson’s own company, Hans Agne Jakobsson AB, in Sweden.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson was one of the central figures of Swedish lighting design during the post-war decades. After training as both a carpenter and architect, he founded his own company in Markaryd in 1951, where he developed lighting that softened the harsher qualities of electric illumination through beautiful shades, natural materials, and restrained forms.
Jakobsson designed this pair of wall lamps in the mid-20th century. It was a revolutionary period in design throughout Scandinavia, where function and form merged in the most intriguing ways. The designer prized the marriage of form and function, with a poise that is hard to imitate or force. The shape and materials of the shades set the overall aesthetic of these lamps. The opaque glass is made into a bulbous form with a that narrows towards the bottom, held securely by the brass shade holders. The holders feel airy, slender, and minimal, allowing the focus to be on the shades and the light they emit. The brass construction also creates a rich, warm glow, enhancing the light while exuding a sense of effortless sophistication. The mid-20th century was defined by leading Swedish designers’ sleek and innovative modernist creations, and Jakobsson’s prowess is evident here as these lamps can both stand out or blend into a room, depending on the interior style.
Sconces are a timeless type of lighting fixture that can easily elevate their surroundings. These fixtures never go out of style and have been in use for centuries for good reason. This model is reflective of a time when creativity knew no bounds, and designers were free to explore new horizons in crafting captivating lighting fixtures.
