The 1950s and 1960s in Europe saw a bold departure from decorative traditions in favour of raw materialism and structural honesty. This shift, starting in the aftermath of the Second World War, gave rise to Brutalist design, a movement known for its unapologetic use of natural texture, weight and geometric strength. In furniture, this translated into pieces that were not only functional but carried a sculptural intensity. It is within this context that this set of four dining chairs was created.

Each chair is constructed from dark-stained wood, with legs and backrests that appear hand cut and chiseled, rather than machined. The robust, slightly irregular forms emphasize the hand of the maker, lending the chairs a distinctly tactile, grounded character. The seats and backrests are tightly woven from natural rope, adding contrast both in tone and material, and enhancing the overall organic impression of the chairs. The silhouettes are reduced to the essentials, with upright backrests and square seats supported by chunky vertical legs. The only curvature to the wood is along the backrest, highlighting the Brutalist pursuit for functionality. The material choices and construction suggest durability and purpose, while the rope seats provide a visual and physical lightness to balance the heavier wood elements. Rope chairs are valued for their comfort and breathability, similarly aligning with the ethos of the era.

This set of chairs is ideal for a space that embraces authenticity and values materials in their natural form. Their clean look and rustic sensibility make them stand out without the need for embellishment, offering a quiet but impactful addition within an interior.
