While Bas Van Pelt's creative work was primarily influenced by the 1920s straight lines dominated by The Hague School, this model is the result of his more mature design era, which was primarily dominated by natural materials and more curvature. While made of solid wood and wicker, these armchairs have an open feel thanks to the airy arrangement of the arms and legs. The curved lines of the armrests are beautifully crafted and follow the raised seat’s angle. The curves nicely contrast with the straight lines of the frame, keeping it from appearing too strict. Apart from the expert woodwork, the upholstered seats stand out as well. The fabric is tightly fitted within the frame, and the seat’s thick shape is an especially pleasing element that offers plenty of comfort both figuratively and literally. According to the story, when Ohlsson arrived in the United States, he took his suitcase and cardboard to hotels all over the country inviting salesmen, department stores, and decorators to view his miniature designs and watch as he disassembled and reassembled his chair design. He quickly became notorious for his patented “knock-down” construction that reduced shipping and storage costs and helped to make the Swedish company Dux a household name in the USA.
