Throughout the 20th century, European furniture makers increasingly experimented with the relationship between exposed wood and upholstered volume. Rather than concealing the structure beneath fabric, many chairs from this period allowed the frame to remain visible, using curved elements to shape the overall silhouette and introduce movement into otherwise compact forms.

This armchair captures that balance through the relationship between its exposed wooden frame and deep aubergine upholstery. The arms sweep outward in a continuous curve before flowing down into the front legs, creating an elegant line that visually frames the chair without appearing overly decorative. These curved elements introduce movement across the otherwise compact silhouette and give the piece a lighter, more refined profile than many heavier upholstered models from the same period. The wood itself has a warm tone and visible grain that contrasts subtly with the dark textile, while the upholstery adds softness to the composition. Rather than relying on tufting or decorative elements, the chair achieves presence through the richness of the colour and the tension between carved details and flowing lines. The backrest and the broad seat gives the piece a comfortable, grounded feel without making it appear bulky.

The combination of fabric and woodwork gives the chair a slightly theatrical quality that still feels restrained. Its silhouette is expressive, allowing it to sit comfortably within both classic Art Deco styled interiors and more contemporary spaces.

Condition:

In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chair has recently been reconditioned. Due to the nature and age of the wood, the item has minor dents, marks, scratches, and discolouration. The item has recently been reupholstered in a premium fabric.
