Dutch ceramic lighting in the 1960s often reflected a close relationship with functional design, where everyday objects were shaped with the same care as artistic ceramic works. Mobach, founded in Utrecht in 1895, built its reputation on traditional craftsmanship and a strong emphasis on hand-thrown forms, while building their centuries-long reputation.

Rather than standardising production, Mobach maintained a workshop-oriented approach, allowing variation in surface and finish to become part of each object’s identity. This table lamp demonstrates that sensibility through its form and richly textured surface. The base is composed of two clearly articulated volumes: a wider cylindrical foot and a narrower, elongated neck, creating a stable yet light composition. The surface is particularly notable, featuring ridges, alongside the already textured surface, enhancing the tactile quality of the ceramic. The earthy tones, ranging from muted browns to softer, lighter hues, reinforce the natural character of the material, allowing the glaze to complement the texture rather than dominate it. Above, the fabric shade introduces a contrasting smoothness, both visually and materially. Its simple, slightly tapered form diffuses the light evenly, producing a warm glow that complements the depth of the ceramic base. The relationship between these elements is balanced and deliberate, with the shade acting as a calm counterpoint to the more expressive base.

What gives this lamp its presence is the way it feels anchored without appearing heavy. The geometry is simple, yet the surface carries enough detail to hold attention. Whether placed on a side table or console, its material qualities can be appreciated without needing excess ornament to stand out.

Condition:

In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The lamp has recently been reconditioned and rewired. The shade has been custom-made by our in-house atelier. Due to the nature of and age of the material, the item may have some marks, scratches, and discolouration. All lighting can be converted for US usage.
