In the design landscape of Europe, the mid-20th century emerged as a golden era, where form seamlessly intertwined with function, giving rise to timeless pieces that continue to captivate contemporary sensibilities. One such enchanting piece from this era is this graceful floor lamp, a testament to the region's commitment to craftsmanship and new ideas and forms.
Rather than seeking attention through ornament, designers often worked to achieve a quiet refinement through high-quality materials and precision. This floor lamp materialises these ideals both in terms of visual and technical quality. The lamp features three slender stems that rise from a dynamic base. The brass necks allow the shades to be adjusted independently, so their openings can face outward. The tapered fabric shades widen slightly, continuing the movement of the brass arms. Their soft textile surfaces contrast with the polished metal and dark body, while their relatively small scale leaves the structure in focus. The piece is fundamentally functional, at the same time having enough character to stand on its own, making it a distinctive example of European lighting from the 1950s.
Its unique construction gives the lamp a far stronger presence than its slender proportions might suggest. Even when switched off, its profile makes it an expressive object in the room; illuminated, the opposing shades become the focus of the composition, adding charm to any interior.
Condition:
In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The lamp has recently been rewired and reconditioned. The shade is a later replacement. Nordic mid-century design of the mid 20th century was defined by restraint, material clarity, and a strong emphasis on functional beauty. Designers and manufacturers in Sweden, Denmark, and Finland sought to create objects that were elegant without being excessive, modern without feeling unnatural. Companies like Bergboms became known for producing refined lighting fixtures that balanced industrial precision with warm materials such as brass, wood, and leather. This lamp reflects an approach where proportion, surface, and light quality are carefully considered to create harmony in a space.
This lamp stands on an elegant tripod brass base that gives it a remarkably light visual footprint while providing excellent stability. Rising from the base is a slender black lacquered metal stem, interrupted by brass details that introduce subtle contrast and outline the vertical composition. The brass continues into the shade support, creating a cohesive transition from base to light source. The lamp draws its character from the interplay of its materials: the warm brass, the deep black lacquer, and the soft texture of the fabric shade. The restrained palette allows the crisp geometry and precise proportions to remain the focus. Model “G-31” has a versatile and elegant presence. Its slim profile occupies little space, yet the tripod base and carefully considered detailing give it a strong identity.
The result is a floor lamp that is both practical and sculptural, demonstrating Bergboms' ability to achieve elegance through thoughtful construction and measured use of materials.

During the 1950s and 1960s, European lighting focused on lamps that were no longer conceived solely as light sources but as multifunctional objects, incorporating features that enhanced every-day living. Pieces like this floor lamp show how elements such as shelving, magazine racks, or display surfaces were incorporated into designs. This approach reflected the period's emphasis on practical living and efficient use of space, while maintaining the clean lines and carefully balanced proportions that defined mid-century interiors.
The lamp is constructed around a slender wooden column rising from a unique tripod wooden base, whose splayed legs provide both stability and a light visual footprint. Three circular glass shelves are positioned at different heights along the wooden body, creating a sculptural arrangement that appears to float around the central column. Their transparent surfaces preserve the openness of the design while providing practical resting places for books, glasses, or small decorative objects. The vertical composition is carefully balanced, with the broad shade anchoring the upper section while the offset glass offers visual interest to the otherwise restrained silhouette. The contrast between the warmth of the timber, the transparency of the glass and the classic wide shade gives the lamp a layered character, allowing it to function equally well as lighting, additional table space, and sculptural furnishing.
Combining illumination with integrated storage, the lamp exemplifies the inventive versatility that characterised a lot of European mid-century furniture. The thoughtful composition and restrained material palette allow it to serve its user while maintaining the elegant, architectural presence of a standalone design object.

Carl Auböck II was born in Vienna, Austria in 1900. After finishing the School of Graphic Design and the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, he attended the Bauhaus and joined a small group of artists in becoming the founding members of the now legendary school.
This pair of “Vice Versa” floor lamps reflects a fascination with sculptural simplicity and materials, while representing a unique piece of design history. The model, first thought to be created by Auböck 1952, has caused a debate within the design world decades after it was first issued. Within Denmark, the “Vice Versa” lamp was widely sold under the label of Svend Aage Holm-Sørensen, a key figure of Scandinavian design. The controversy still surrounds the model today, however what is undisputed is its beauty. Each lamp is composed of a slender black lacquered metal stem rising from a circular weighted base, creating a simple vertical silhouette. At the top sits the defining feature: a shade placed on a round metal holder. The shade can be reversed and re-positioned, allowing the direction and character of the light to shift depending on its placement. This element reflects Bauhaus functionality principles while still feeling elegant. Despite the minimal construction, the lamps have a strong sculptural presence, particularly through the balance between the thin stem and the oversized curved reflector that mirrors the conical base and ties in the design.
In 1925, Karl Heinrich Auböck passed away at the age of 53, leaving Carl II and the sculptor Mara Uckunowa, Carl’s wife, to take over operations of the Werkstätte at 23 Bernardgasse. In 1954 Carl Auböck II was awarded four gold medals at the Milan Triennale for designing a range of metalware, and pieces like this pair of lamps stand as proof of his genius.

ASEA has a rich heritage rooted in lighting innovation - pushing boundaries and redefining norms, thus playing a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of Swedish lighting design during the 20th century. Their commitment to quality craftsmanship and avant-garde design principles set them apart as pioneers in the industry and are the reason the company has remained iconic as a manufacturer of Swedish mid-century lighting to this day.
This lamp is constructed around a slender brass stem rising from a circular base, creating a defined vertical axis that gives the piece a light presence. Brass was the preferred material choice during this period, not only for its durability but also for the tonal warmth it lends to simple forms. The contrast between the smooth, reflective brass and the textured shade of fabric creates a quiet interplay of materials. Despite its simplicity, the proportions are carefully judged, ensuring that all elements work together.
This floor lamp’s presence is an excellent way to elevate the ambience of a room, creating an inviting and stylish atmosphere. The piece is particularly adaptable, capable of blending into a range of interiors while still offering a refined point of interest. Pierre Guariche is one of the most important designers of the French post-war period. Guariche is best known for the luminaires he designed, many of which feature details like hidden light sources, perforated metal surfaces and slender leg structures. With its clever construction, the “Kite” is a great example of the designer’s endless interest in technological innovation.
Officially called model “G30”, this floor lamp was designed in the early 1950s. Guariche’s mid-century lights were created between 1951 and 1959, and are innovatively designed with a visible joy of experimentation. This is especially apparent in this model, featuring elements that may appear purely decorative, but on closer inspection turn out to be absolutely functional. The design is defined by the reflector, which also inspired the model’s nickname. Its white lacquered, perforated sheet metal reflector resembles a boat’s sail, and creates a filtered and soft light. This hidden illuminant and the glare-free light flow by means of the clever reflector provides atmospheric ambient light, while also giving the lamp a sculptural appearance. The light “sail” is balanced by the smaller black reflector embracing the lightbulb and grounded by two brass masts. The triangular metal pedestal is lacquered black and has sharp, straight edges to complete the visual and the literal balance of the design. Every small detail, from the pierced reflector to the smaller one that “glows” from inside, shows the artistic and visionary prowess of Guariche.
The “G30” is one of those models where the term ‘iconic’ might even be an understatement (especially with the term’s generous use nowadays). From its year of creation to this day, it is still a pioneering piece that is a perfect source of aesthetic pleasure, and of course, of an indirect, pleasant mood lighting.

About the designer:
Designer Pierre Guariche was born in 1926. He studied at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, graduating in 1949. He then worked in the studio of Marcel Gascoin and presented his first designs at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and the Salon des Arts Ménagers.
In 1953, he designed the mythical “Tonneau” chair for Steiner, first in plastic (1953) and then in bent plywood (1954). In 1954, he founded the Atelier de Recherché Plastique with Joseph-André Motte and Michel Mortier. Three years later in 1957, he was named Artistic Director of furniture manufacturer Meurop. As a teacher, he shared his knowledge with the students of the Ecole Supérieure d’Architecture de Tournai and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris.
He knew how to bring a personal, innovative touch to design, combining aestheticism and series production. His heart’s desire was to respond to the requirements of his era by making use of series production techniques. His creations, such as the Tonneau chair (1953 and 1954), the Tulipe chair (1956) and the Président desk (1961), have become legendary pieces.
Along with his furniture pieces, his innovative lighting models brought him much success and renown. Today, Guariche's interior lights are being produced by traditional French manufacturer Sammode.

Paavo Tynell, the “man who illuminated Finland”, was known for designs that carried functional elements that show his consideration for the user as well as the lamp’s utilitarian role. Combining different materials and techniques, he found the delicate balance between practicality and ornamentation.
Model “K10-10” is a piece that carries the finest mid-century marks of elegance: quiet in its nature, yet striking in its role as a useful design object. Known for its characteristic conical shade, the design creates a subtle harmony in proportions. This distinctive detail gives the design its nickname, commonly known as the “Nun’s hat” due to its striking resemblance to the head covering. Made out of a white metal sheet with a small decorative - as well as functional - design element, the rim features a finely perforated finish. The small incisions allow the light to escape and break the otherwise centred focus of the reflector cone. For a more upward or downward facing ray of light, the lampshade can be adjusted at the neck. On this joint a fine engraving is visible, noting the manufacturer’s mark of Idman. The lamp’s rod is covered with meticulously arranged rattan fibres, ascending down in a precise alignment, twisting and turning in a gradient of brown tones along the whole vertical stem. Due to its organic appearance, the addition of this natural material breaks the metallic finish of the lamp, creating harmony in the complementary tones and colours of the rattan and brass elements. The simple circular base is a crucial element in terms of stability, while also giving the design a modern look. The stem is situated slightly off-centre on the round base, creating even more visual interest. The beauty in its simplicity and gracious form can light up any interior where it is placed.
In the 1950s, Idman played a crucial role in shaping the Finnish design landscape. The company collaborated with renowned designers, resulting in a portfolio of iconic pieces that continue to be cherished today. This model, with its blend of materials, impeccable craftsmanship, and timeless design remains a testament to the company's dedication to creating objects of enduring beauty.
