Paavo Tynell is regarded as one of Finland’s pioneering lighting designers, celebrated for his poetic approach that merged natural inspiration with refined craftsmanship. Working for his company, Taito Oy, during the first half of the 20th century, Tynell was instrumental in shaping the character of Finnish lighting design. His creations often combined brass, glass, and delicate detailing, resulting in fixtures that feel timeless and sophisticated. This hanging lamp, model “1004”, is an exemplary representation of Tynell's artistic vision and technical mastery.

This uniquely decorated hanging lamp was designed in an era in which Finland saw the birth of many of its most iconic lighting models. It was a period of consistency, excellence, and sophistication design wise. Despite its age, this ceiling light has a hint of Art Deco in its design, with sinuous lines and pronounced decorative elements. One of the defining features of 20th century lighting is its marriage of functionality and aesthetics; the era's designers believed that a well-made lighting fixture could serve a practical purpose while also acting as a piece of art, and this lamp is a testament to this sentiment. Moreover, brass was very much one of the most popular materials of the era, and when combined with glass, a sleek shiny look can be created, like this model exemplifies. This material duo makes sense from both a functional and visual standpoint. Not only is brass corrosion-resistant and durable, but it withstands the test of time, developing a beautiful patina as the years go by. Moreover, on the list of decorative elements are the ring on the finial, the rod adorned with a floral element, the curves of the arms, and finally, the way the rod connects to the canopy. These features make this hanging lamp an early example of Tynell’s expressiveness that drew inspiration from previous design movements and eras.

Tynell was a master of peculiar decorative elements that never feel tacky or excessive and this is mainly thanks to his great sense of balance. In 1918 Tynell founded Oy Taito AB, which eventually became the Finnish lighting industry trendsetter during the interwar period. This rare model from the 1930s can easily draw all the attention while not compromising on quality and functionality.‎

Known as “the man who illuminated Finland,” Tynell was a pioneer in bringing elegance, lightness, and innovation to everyday interiors. His designs for Taito helped establish Finnish lighting as a global benchmark, blending functionality with a poetic sensibility that made lamps more than utilitarian objects, but integral elements of atmosphere and style.

This model features a softly stepped opaline glass shade that diffuses light evenly, producing a warm and atmospheric glow. The shade’s gentle form showcases Tynell’s gift for balancing simplicity with refinement, ensuring that the piece remains modest in profile while quietly sophisticated in detail. Suspended from a slender nickel-plated rod attached to a polished canopy, the lamp demonstrates Tynell’s sensitivity to proportion and harmony, qualities that made his designs adaptable to a wide range of interiors. When lit, the lamp enhances its surroundings in a practical, yet atmospheric way through masterful construction, elegant materials, and timeless allure.

This lamp is one of those models that lighting design enthusiasts recognize immediately, a truly iconic design. Paavo Tynell designed this model “9060” in 1950-52 for the secretariat's room at the United Nations building in New York City.

Lighting designer Paavo Tynell, “the man who illuminated Finland,” was the founder and chief designer of Taito Oy - the first industrial producer of lighting fixtures in Finland. A master craftsman himself, Tynell’s elegant brass designs were derivative of a traditional aesthetic with a modern sensibility. This model is in many ways his most famous ceiling light design and not solely for its impressive story. The design has entirely unique elements such as the glass inside the reflector, the unusual circular finial, and the perforated shade to name a few. All of these features are in service of the unique distribution of the light, provided by four bulbs sitting above the glass inside the white lacquered reflector. The light shines in all directions thanks to the open, hanging brazier-like shade, the open bottom with brass circles, and the patterned, perforated brass. The result is bordering the realm of lighting art, with the brass dressed in golden light. The body is held by two brass rods connected to the rounded canopy. Despite its many distinctive elements, the design is united by its material, the beautiful polished brass, Tynell’s preferred material to work with.

Tynell’s international design influence grew thanks to the Finland House located in New York City and resulted in prestigious commissions both for public buildings such as the United Nations HQ but also for important private collections. Model “9060” is a historic testament of his design prowess and craftsmanship, remaining one of the most coveted lighting pieces to this day.

About the designer:

Paavo Tynell (1890-1973) was an industrial designer, known as the great pioneer of Finnish lighting design and fondly dubbed as “the man who illuminated Finland”.

Tynell was one of the founders and chief designers of Taito Oy – the first industrial producer of lighting fixtures in Finland. With the innovation of electricity in the beginning of the 20th century, Taito Oy and Tynell expanded the thinking and manufacturing of modern lighting solutions in Europe and abroad.

Paavo Tynell rose to prominence in the 1930s and 40s when he collaborated with some of the most renowned Finnish architects, Alvar Aalto being the most notable one. Working to incorporate artificial lighting into modern environments, Tynell’s company Taito Oy produced fixtures for all of Alvar Aalto’s major projects. Tynell was especially appraised through his involvement with the Finland House, a design atelier in New York that showcased the work of Finnish designers and craftspeople. His elegant brass designs became an instant success in North America, and he began creating lighting designs for the prestigious American company, Lightolier.

Marked by delicacy and softness, his most famous forms in lightning echo the structures of nature; he adroitly created sculptural shapes reminiscent of the branches of trees, swirling snowflakes and seashells. ~H.

Glössner & Co. was a Swedish glass company founded by brothers Karl-Erik and Harry Glössner, active from the 1930s. Known for their decorative glasswork, they produced a range of items including etched and frosted glass, leaded glass windows, and artistic lighting fixtures. Their designs often featured stylised figures, nature motifs, and geometric patterns, all carachteristics found in this ceiling lamp.

Bo Notini was among the most accomplished lighting designers working in Sweden with Glössner & Co.. Notini came from a family of designers, his grandfather Harald and father Gunnar being key figures of Swedish lighting creation. Bo Notini often incorporated etched or sandblasted decoration into understated, elegant forms, in the case of this lamp, they take the form of birds, clouds and raindrops - all elements inspired by nature. These stylised elements are etched on an amber glass shade suspended from a slender brass rod and canopy, creating a light composition. The gently curved sides of the shade soften the simple profile, while the polished brass introduces a subtle metallic counterpoint to the textured glass. When lit, the amber glass diffuses a warm glow that highlights the etched decoration from within. The restrained palette of brass and glass allows the quality of the materials and craftsmanship to remain the focus, resulting in a fixture that is both decorative and highly refined.

Glössner & Co. developed a body of work distinguished by its refined proportions and exceptional glass craftsmanship. This piece remains an elegant example of Swedish lighting design from the 1940s, equally compelling as a source of ambient light and as a finely crafted decorative object.

Mid-century European lighting design was shaped by a growing interest in balancing functionality with sleek, sculptural form. Brass became a favoured material throughout the period, valued for its warmth, durability, and ability to bring refinement to otherwise restrained forms. Pendant lamps in particular offered designers an opportunity to experiment with geometry and proportion, creating fixtures that could define a space while providing soft, atmospheric illumination.

This pair of pendant lights reflects those qualities through a striking combination of clean geometry and material richness. Each fixture is crafted entirely from brass, composed around a tapered central body that descends elegantly from a slender suspension rod. The lower section expands outward into a geometric shade, creating a silhouette that feels architectural. A projecting circular rim extends beyond the main body, introducing a horizontal element that balances the verticality of the design. The warm brass surface catches and reflects light beautifully, accentuating the crisp transitions between the different planes and giving the fixtures depth even when unlit. Beneath, a diffuser conceals the bulb, while helping to defuse the light. The result is a pleasant ambient glow that highlights the warm tones of the brass and reinforces the elegant simplicity of the design. This pair possesses a strong visual presence through proportion, material, and considered structural detailing.

Together, these pendant lamps embody the enduring appeal of mid-century modern lighting. Their sculptural form allows them to function equally well as practical light sources and as decorative focal points within an interior. Whether suspended above a dining table, kitchen island, or seating area, they bring warmth, sophistication, and a distinctly mid-century character to a space.

With their origins in a small workshop in Aarhus, Fog & Mørup was founded by Ansgar Fog and Erik Mørup. The company grew their reputation gradually, and by the 1930s and 40s, were one of the most well-known manufacturers in Denmark. Many of their most successful models explored the relationship between light, structure, and ornament, resulting in fixtures that functioned as decorative objects even when unlit, and this hanging lamp model is the perfect example.

Model “E8655” stands apart through its remarkably graphic composition. Suspended from slender stems, the fixtures culminate in radial arrangements that resemble flowers, propellers, or stylised sun representations. Lights in varying lengths extend outward from a dark central structure, creating a striking contrast that emphasizes the geometry of the design. Unlike other ceiling lights that conceal their mechanics through big shades and diffusers, these fixtures celebrate construction and form, allowing every component to contribute to the overall visual effect. The bodies of the lamp showcase the Art Deco bold and glamorous forms of the 1940s, while the patina of the brass reminds us of their history.  The horizontal orientation gives the lights a broad presence, unafraid to define the space they occupy.

Fog & Mørup continued to expand steadily through World War II, and by the second half of the 20th century, it had reached international recognition. As examples of Danish lighting from the 1940s, these pieces demonstrate a willingness to experiment with form while retaining the elegance and restraint that would later become hallmarks of Scandinavian design.

Pendant lamps got their name from the Latin word "pendere," which means "to hang down." One of the great things about pendant lamps - besides their stylish look - is that they are a great option to make interiors appear more spacious. As practical pieces of interior design, they can be used to concentrate light, or to just add an accent to the room.

One of the best things about pendent or hanging ceiling lamps - besides their stylish look - is that they are a great option to make interiors appear more spacious. They can be used to concentrate light, or to just add an accent to the room. Pendant lights occupied a central role in mid-century European interiors, particularly as designers began treating lighting as an architectural element where form followed function to create beautiful models. The most successful examples relied on simple geometries and a careful selection of materials, using glass and metal to control both the appearance of the fixture and the quality of the light it produced.

This pendant lamp embraces that philosophy through its clean, tapering silhouette. The shade is formed from opal glass in a conical shape that creates an elegant transition from the narrow brass fitting above. The glass diffuses light evenly across its surface, producing a warm glow while concealing the bulb within. Above the shade, the brass mount introduces a subtle metallic accent that continues through the slender suspension rod, fixed to the ceiling through another conical element, ensuring visual coherence. The continuity of these elements give the lamp a strong presence despite its relative simple geometry. The contrast between the smooth, luminous glass and the reflective brass creates visual depth without disturbing the simplicity of the composition.

When suspended, the lamp appears light, succeeding through its clarity: every component serves a purpose, and nothing feels excessive. This combination of refined proportions, warm materials, and soft illumination explains why fixtures of this kind continue to feel relevant in contemporary interiors.

Hanging lights have been used as decorative focal points for rooms since the early 20th century. In Swedish mid-century design, where interior lighting is of particular importance, designers managed to master the art of light without disrupting space perception.

Crafted from brass and a lace fabric inner shade, and thanks to its minimalist form and neutral colour palette, this piece is quintessentially Scandinavian modern. While the rod and canopy have an understated look and direct the eye to the body, the main decorative feature of this lamp is the outer brass element that seems to “cage” the lace shade. The result is a charming playful twist to a rather simplistic design. The airy arrangement of the outer brass further accentuates the separate elements and the quality of the execution. The combination of materials, shapes, and textures create a classically Swedish modern design, a return to bright simplicity that is in opposition with the later aesthetic of the brighter mass-produced models.

While certain lighting fixtures go in and out of style, some hanging lamps remain timelessly stylish. This model is one such design thanks to its aesthetic and quality; it is certain to look good with various furniture pieces and interior styles.

Swedish Grace was an exquisite early twentieth-century design movement that remains largely unknown today. Prior to the minimalist Swedish designs that were to develop in the post-war period, Swedish Grace grew in parallel with the Art Deco movement. It is an important chapter of modern design history and can be considered the Nordic branch of the Art Deco style.

This elegant and stylish lamp has a classic look at first sight, but upon closer inspection, it reveals its modern structure and elegance. The material choice imbues this lamp with a subtle warmth and sophistication, creating a timeless aesthetic that blends understated luxury with functional craftsmanship. Like many of the decade’s designs, this hanging lamp masterfully pairs materials and textures. While the rod and canopy have an understated look and direct the eye to the body, the main decorative feature of this lamp is the brass element just above the glass shade, which provides a charming playful twist to a rather simplistic design. Moreover, the round, almost cylindrical shape of the shade was often chosen for lighting models as it diffuses and shows off the warm light emitted on a large surface, creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere. Whether the lamp is on or off, the opaque glass shade provides great contrast to the patinated brass structure. This piece is a timeless example of how simplicity, combined with thoughtful craftsmanship, can become a work of art in its own right.

While certain lighting fixtures go in and out of style, some hanging lamps remain timelessly stylish. This model is one such design thanks to its aesthetic and quality; it is certain to look good with various furniture pieces and interior styles.

ASEA (before 1977 - Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget), was a Swedish electrotechnical company headquartered in Västerås. It was founded in 1883 and was, until 1987, the city's largest industrial company. The historic company has had a decisive impact on how the Swedish lighting industry developed, but also on design history. Some models are preserved in museums. Their technical prowess can be also observed in pieces like this hanging ceiling lamp.

This innovative lamp model seamlessly blends tradition with modernity, reflecting the era's design ethos. Featuring a harmonious blend of materials, the lamp offers a touch of refined sophistication. It boasts a sleek design, combining a round glass shade, a sturdy and durable, elongated brass stem that gracefully extends upward to the ceiling. The slender stem lends an air of elegance while the round shade introduces a subtle organic element, showcasing the balance of this well-thought-out design. Lamps like this can be used to concentrate light, or to just add an accent to the room. Brass was very much one of the most popular materials of the mid-century era, and when combined with glass, a sleek shiny look can be created, like this model exemplifies. This material duo makes sense from both a functional and visual standpoint. Not only is brass corrosion-resistant and durable, but it withstands the test of time, developing a beautiful patina as the years go by. Similarly, the tinted glass is also a long-lasting material, and its beautiful shiny surface compliments the warm glow of the metal. The design’s main point is its effective simplicity, free of any unnecessary ornamentation. The uncluttered look leaves the attention on the materials and on functionality that the form is also in service of. In addition, while the design is quite succinct with clear lines and precision in the smallest details, it still possesses a luxuriously stylish impression.

ASEA has a rich heritage rooted in lighting innovation, pushing boundaries and redefining norms, playing a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of Swedish lighting design during the 20th century. Their commitment to quality craftsmanship and avant-garde design principles set them apart as pioneers in the industry.
