Hans-Agne Jakobsson was one of the central figures of Swedish lighting design during the post-war decades. After training as both a carpenter and architect, he founded his own company in Markaryd in 1951, where he developed lighting that softened the harsher qualities of electric illumination through beautiful shades, natural materials, and restrained forms.
Model “G-23” reflects that philosophy through its strikingly minimal composition. The lamp is constructed around a slender black stem rising from a conical metal base, creating a strong vertical axis. This narrow structure directs attention upward toward the geometric shade, which becomes the visual focal point of the design. The shade diffuses the light softly through its fabric surface, allowing the illumination to glow evenly across the angular planes. The contrast between the dark, linear stem and the light shade gives the lamp a strong graphic quality. The conical base mirrors the shape of the shade above, subtly reinforcing the symmetry of the composition.
The “G-23” lamp is proof of Jakobsson’s approach to lighting as a way of shaping an interior, often reducing forms to their essential while paying attention to proportion and quality. The lamp is compact, thus it does not take over a room, while its controlled simplicity leaves a lasting impact.
