Pierre Chapo was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's balanced lines, Corbusier's research on proportions and the Bauhaus. The three principles that motivated him were material, form, and function. Despite his love for the imperfect, he measured his furniture by means of the golden ratio and used elm wood as his preferred material, and this model is a beautiful example of his ideals in a material form.

This “S31 A” stool has the playful and majestic characteristics typical of Pierre Chapo's emblematic creations. Asymmetrical, yet perfectly balanced. Made from elm, this stool has a rustic style with architectural precision. This comes as no surprise, as Pierre Chapo trained as an architect in Paris and this knowledge becomes evident in his elaborate structural solutions. The joinery technique is unique yet simple, enhancing the honest design. Just as with art styles, culture and fashion, each region of the world had their own joinery styles. While each region’s techniques are vastly different from one another, they still followed the same principles, in that they would join the timbers in such a way that they couldn’t be pulled apart. This is also true for this stool, making it a durable and timeless piece. The smooth circular seat shows off the beautiful grain of the elm which not only highlights Chapo’s preference for the material but also his deep respect for it. Furthermore, the rounded shape is a lovely contrast to the sharpness of the legs.

Being functional as well as aesthetically pleasing, this stool is a great addition to set the tone of a space. Its design is archtectural yet simple in its material choice, there is nothing superfluous about it. It strips back the unnecessary, showcasing the essential beauty of the wood and its capabilities.

Despite being long misattributed to Axel Einar Hjorth, this “Pall” or “Palle” stool was designed and manufactured by K. J. Pettersson & Söner Storvreta in the second half of the 20th century. The stool is a striking example of Scandinavian design of the 1970s. It represents the Swedish brand's commitment to high-quality and sustainable design that would seamlessly blend into both modern and traditional interiors.

The model embodies principles of the mid-century and Scandinavian modern movements, where functionality, simplicity, and the use of natural materials take precedence. Visually, the piece features a bold and almost sculptural form, with clean lines and smooth surfaces that reflect the organic beauty of the wood. Its silhouette is minimalist yet distinctive, with a gently curved seat to provide ergonomic comfort. In the absence of heavy ornamentation, this stool takes pride in its material’s natural qualities. Pine wood became the bamboo of the north in the sense that it lasts for decades. The stool is constructed from several slats of pine wood, with the grain clearly visible, adding texture and warmth. Thanks to the individual blocks, which are visible from the side, the pattern and grain differs throughout, thus increasing the visual appeal. The base of the stool is open on each side, emphasizing its sculptural look and providing a sense of airiness. This thoughtful craftsmanship not only highlights the beauty of the material but also ensures stability and practicality in use. This sort of northern minimalism allows people to invite peace into their home without creating a space that is uninviting or cold. Similarly, this stool is full of vitality without being chaotic or overworked.

The stool is a testament to the timeless quality of Scandinavian design, which continues to resonate in contemporary interiors. Its unadorned elegance make it a perfect piece for modern homes, offering both style and utility. With its durable construction and inviting form, this piece is more than just a stool—it is a work of art that would bring a sense of natural beauty and practicality to any space.

About the designer:

The “Pall” or “Palle” tabouret has long been associated with Hjorth, however, many with knowledge in the field suspected it to be a misattribution both in terms of period and designer. Swedish auction house, Uppsala Auktionskammare finally put an end to the mystery surrounding this stool design in early January 2020, when in their Decorative Sale auction catalogue a model of the previously misattributed Pall stool was for the first time attributed to K.J. Pettersson & Söner.

The Swedish town of Storvreta was known for its many furniture manufacturers and the largest among them was Karl Julius Pettersson and Sons (Gösta, Nils, Karl-Erik and Birger respectively) furniture manufactory. Pettersson & Söner started as a small-scale manufacturing business in 1933 in a building at the address Fullerövägen 9. Production grew rapidly, resulting in a larger factory and furniture shop, now under the company’s name, AB K. J. Pettersson & Söner. In 1948 a separate furniture store / exhibition hall was started on the property next to the furniture factory, which a few years later was moved to more suitable premises. In 1953 the expansion continued with another, even larger factory building which still survives.

The furniture company specialised primarily in sofa beds with patented constructions. In low season the company employed around fifty to sixty people, while in high season, the number grew to around a hundred. As Karl-Erik Pettersson reminisced:

“A good thing was that we didn't have to ask any authority for permission to build during the first 10-12 years. It was just putting the shovel in the ground and building as we wished. And we really built. We expanded the factory and we built it privately. But, as the municipal bureaucracy expanded, more and more people wanted to be involved in deciding what we should do and how we would do it. We continued to specialize in sofa beds, corner beds and countertops. And it went well and time and time again we got our sofas jury-selected at the big furniture fairs.” K. J. Pettersson & Söner worked in Storvreta for 48 years until closing down in 1980.

This beautiful set of six stools are crafted in the manner of French design duo Audoux-Minet. Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet worked together during the mid-20th century. The duo are known for their innovative use of natural, sustainable materials, including rope, wicker, and bamboo. Their work was heavily influenced by the Modernist movement, which sought to create functional and streamlined designs that were accessible to a wider audience.

Like in Scandinavia, there was an early emphasis on wood in most European mid-century design as it connected everyday objects to nature. This set of six is a perfect example of this sentiment, and the visual benefits of an understated, organic design. The high quality wicker makes these pieces outstanding examples of woven furniture. They feature a fairly traditional shape with rounded edges and an airy feel. The straightforward shape highlights the understated beauty of the materials, allowing the beautiful woven pattern and the grain of the wood to stand out. The seats are set on three splayed club feet, stained in a rich colour lending a more dramatic presence to the set. The tripod base is ideal for ensuring the sturdiness needed for a classic piece of furniture, even more so when paired with the T stretcher placed between the legs. Being functional as well as aesthetically pleasing, these stools are a great addition to set the tone of a space. The design is strong but subtle, with expert wickerwork thanks to which it can add depth as well as functionality to a space.

The interplay of a simple structure and refined detailing evokes a sense of harmony, aligning with the era’s focus on blending beauty with utility. The organic design makes this set stand out with an elemental edge. The colour palette further allows them to easily adapt to almost any interior to either complement a space, or to pop as accent pieces.

This pair of barstools showcase the Danish principles of interior design: careful proportions, high-quality materials, and an emphasis on functionality. The result was seating models that felt refined enough for domestic settings while retaining the simplicity and durability required for everyday use.

Designers in the post-war period focused on simple, well-made pieces of home-grown and exotic woods alike. Made from richly grained wood, these stools embody the perfect balance of detail and minimalist design. A striking contrast between materials defines the character of this pair. The warm-toned wooden frames and veneered backrests are paired with black leather seats, creating a composition that feels both elegant and inviting. The bent base provides visual softness and ergonomic support, while the slim legs and stretchers maintain an elegant, lightweight profile. Particularly appealing is the way the grain of the wood flows across the backs, introducing movement and depth to an otherwise restrained silhouette. The leather seats add another layer of texture, their dark surfaces grounding the composition and emphasizing the richness of the wood. Defined by clean, smooth lines, and excellent joinery, each of these stools was evidently created by skilled craftsmen.

Placed at a kitchen counter, bar, or high dining table, the pair brings a distinctly Scandinavian sense of ease to an interior. More than simply elevated seating, they reflect the Danish talent for creating furniture that is practical, comfortable, and quietly sophisticated, sure to appeal to generations.

Brutalist furniture emerged as a reaction against refinement and ornament, favouring instead expressive raw materials. Designers and artisans embraced rough textures, asymmetry, and forms that appeared almost primitive in their honesty. While many Brutalist pieces relied on heavy geometric volumes, others explored a more organic language, drawing inspiration from nature and hand-carved objects. Chairs such as this example blur the boundary between furniture and sculpture, where utility merges with artistic expression.

This side chair stands out through its highly sculptural presence and deeply textured surface. Hand-carved from solid wood, the chair preserves a raw and tactile character throughout its form. The seat is formed as a hand carved, rough disc, supported by four irregular legs that taper organically towards the floor. Above, the backrest rises in a dramatic arched form, creating a silhouette that immediately draws the eye. The uneven contours, visible tool marks, and richly textured surface give the piece a sense of organic flow and individuality, ensuring that no two pieces are entirely the same. Rather than concealing the making process, the chair celebrates it, allowing every carved ridge to become part of its visual identity. The dark patinated wood further enhances this effect, creating depth across the surface and accentuating the sculptural quality of the design. Despite its unconventional appearance, the chair balances visual drama with functionality.

More than a seating piece, this chair functions as a work of art. Its expressive form allows it to stand alone as a statement object while still serving its practical purpose. The combination of raw craftsmanship, organic shaping, and Brutalist sensibility offers the chair a powerful presence.

Throughout the mid-20th century, European cabinetmakers continued to draw on traditional woodworking techniques while embracing the cleaner silhouettes associated with modern design. Smaller utility pieces from this period, such as this pair of stools, serve a variety of functions while maintaining the same attention to proportion and material quality found in larger furnishings. Their simplicity allowed the beauty of the wood and the skill of the maker to take centre stage.

Reduced to only the necessary elements, this pair showcases the quality of the timber, the precision of the joinery, and the maker's understanding of proportion. Crafted from solid wood, each stool is defined by a compact square seat supported by four gently splaying legs. The construction is straightforward, yet the clear lines and strong craftsmanship prove their quality. Beneath the seats, stretchers connect the legs on all sides, reinforcing the structure while creating a pleasing geometry. These elements not only contribute to the stability of the stools but also add depth and visual interest to the otherwise minimal silhouette. The slightly softened edges of the seats balance the angular construction, preventing the design from feeling austere. The understated appearance of the stools allows the material itself to become the focal point, showcasing the character and natural variation of the wood.

Versatile and enduring, these stools function equally well as occasional seating, side tables, or decorative accents within an interior. Their uncomplicated form allows them to integrate effortlessly into a wide variety of settings, from rustic and traditional spaces to more contemporary environments.

Danish furniture from the 1970s saw an interest in craftsmanship and natural materials, moving away from strict industrial modernism toward pieces with a more tactile and handmade character. This oak stool reflects the cabinetmakers’ interest in highlighting the texture of wood through carving, turning, and exposed grain, while materials such as sheepskin and wool were introduced to soften otherwise simple constructions.

Rather than concealing elements of the construction process, pieces from this period embraced it, allowing hand-worked details to become part of the final expression. This stool showcases the contrast between its heavily carved legs and soft sheepskin seat. The frame is constructed through essential elements: four turned legs supporting a thick upholstered top. Each leg is individually worked with rounded carvings that create a rhythmic appearance, giving the otherwise compact stool a strong sculptural quality. The oak retains a warm natural tone that highlights the carving and the variation in the grain. Above, the padded seat is upholstered in cream sheepskin, introducing a different texture to the composition. The wool surface softens the geometry of the wooden structure and gives the piece a tactile warmth. Thanks to the upholstery, the stool gains a fuller and more relaxed silhouette despite its minimal construction.

The balance between rough carved wood and soft sheepskin gives the piece its timeless appeal. This piece functions as extra seating, a footstool, or as a small accent, while still carrying the material richness and presence of Scandinavian furniture of the period.

Derived from the French "brut", meaning raw, Brutalism describes the architectural style that emerged in the mid-20th century, featuring minimalist constructions that showcase bare materials and structural elements over decorative design. It originated post–World War II, when low-cost housing and government buildings were composed of mainly raw, unrefined materials. Similarly, in furniture design, Brutalism inspired creators to follow the same look of deliberate simplicity, rawness and strength.

These chairs reflect the deliberate simplicity, rawness and strength sought out by the creators of Brutalist pieces. Without any heavy ornamentation, the focus falls on the natural materials, the authenticity being celebrated, rather than disguised or embellished. This choice of pine not only aligns with the organic principles of Brutalism, but it also contributes to the chairs' overall longevity in both form and function. Each chair is constructed from dark-stained wood, with legs and backrests that appear hand cut rather than machined. The robust, slightly irregular forms emphasise the hand of the maker, lending the chairs a distinctly tactile, grounded character. The proportions are harmonious, with the backs that widen towards the top, and mirroring splayed tripod legs. The beauty of craftsmanship is evident in every detail of this set. The resulting union of form and function exemplifies the marriage of beauty and useful design.

This set of chairs is ideal for a space that embraces authenticity and values materials in their natural form. Their clean look and rustic sensibility make them stand out without the need for embellishment, offering a quiet but impactful addition within an interior.

Throughout the 20th century, Scandinavian designers developed a reputation for their devotion to honest materials, functional forms, and a deep respect for traditional craftsmanship. Norwegian furniture makers in particular often took cues from rural design, interpreting it through a modern lens to create pieces that balanced simplicity and comfort. Krogenæs, a Norwegian workshop, embraced these high-quality, yet utilitarian values in their design language and material choices. This pair of stools reflects this commitment with clarity and character.

These low stools feature sturdy, solid oak bases with gently tapered legs and stretchers that reinforce stability while also adding a subtle rhythm to the silhouette. The wood has been left with a natural finish that highlights its warm tone and visible grain. Resting atop each base is a generously padded seat upholstered in soft off-white sheepskin, giving the pieces an inviting texture and a tactile contrast to the structured frame beneath. The sheepskin not only softens the profile but also offers comfort and warmth, both physically and aesthetically. Stools have long been versatile furnishings, used across cultures and eras in functional and decorative ways. In the Scandinavian context, they often served as multi-purpose pieces: footrests, extra seating, or even small tables. The low height of these stools, paired with their plush tops, makes them ideal as ottomans or casual seating options that add an organic softness to an interior. Their modest scale allows them to be moved easily, fitting neatly into both small and open-plan spaces.

This pair captures the essence of Norwegian design in its purest form: practical, beautifully made, and inherently charming. Whether used on their own or paired with a lounge chair, these stools bring a grounded, natural quality to any space.
