Art Deco furniture combined luxurious materials with bold architectural forms, favouring strong silhouettes. Seating from the period often emphasised generous proportions and solid construction, creating pieces that conveyed both permanence and comfort. Club chairs became one of the movement's defining furniture types, pairing deep upholstered seats with expressive frames that reflected the era's fascination with geometry and craftsmanship.

This pair or armchairs is distinguished by their bold oak frames, the broad panelled sides form the armrests and give the chairs an imposing presence. The thick timber construction contrasts beautifully with the upholstery, creating a balance between visual weight and inviting comfort. The wood constructing the frame not only showcase a beautiful natural grain, but is also durable and resistant, sure to maintain the look and functionality for generations. Still, arguably the most striking aspect of this pair is the natural deer hide that covers the seat and back cushions. The distinctive white spotting makes each chair unique and introduces an organic counterpoint to the disciplined geometry of the frame. The warm brown tones of the hide complement the rich grain of the wood, while the exposed timber surfaces allow the quality of the wood to remain a central feature of the design, both in perfect balance. Slightly recessed plinth-style bases visually ground the chairs, which enhance the architectural character without adding unnecessary detail.

Every element is carefully designed, allowing the strong construction and exceptional materials to define the overall expression. They exemplify the Art Deco interest in honest materials and forms, offering comfortable seating while making a strong architectural statement within an interior.

French mid-century seating frequently combined elements of regional craftsmanship with the cleaner lines associated with modernist furniture. These chairs are exemplary of the main ideals of mid-century modernism, characterised by clean, simple lines, honest use of materials, and a lack of unnecessary decorative embellishments. Instead, the focus is on craftsmanship and clever design.

The pair, crafted in the manner of Jacques Lardin, is confident yet discreet, with clean junctions and honest detailing of the joinery. Chairs are often considered especially revealing of a designer's skill because of the strict limits placed on their form by the demands of the human body. With these armchairs, the designer arrived at a clearly-structured solution in which a high degree of coherence is maintained while the chairs appear visually light and open. The warm tone of the wood highlights the natural grain, adding visual depth and character to the clean, architectural structure. Upholstered in off-white fabric, the chairs gain their quiet luxury through material rather than embellishment. Together, the wood and fabric establish a dialogue between texture and form: one smooth, one tactile, both grounded in natural beauty. They function effortlessly as statement pieces while remaining practical for everyday use. Timeless in form and character, the pair offers an expression of 1940s craftsmanship that fits with ease into both modern and classic interiors.

Though many mid-century French designers may not have the same name recognition as some of their Scandinavian counterparts, they were integral to developing a modern aesthetic in Europe. The appreciation for their contribution is still growing today making outstanding pieces like these chairs highly sought after.

The “Oskar” armchair was designed in 1939; a busy year for Carl Malmsten as he also participated in the New York World Fair. It was at this fair where the expression “Swedish Modern” was coined, but Malmsten remained a traditionalist, mainly concerned with comfort in the home.

As with so many of Malmsten’s pieces of furniture, Oskar was modelled on an earlier design. This pair belongs to Carl Malmsten's earlier works, and the structures are made of solid pine from Swedish forests. As it can be expected from the “Master of Wood”, the frames are expertly designed, with ergonomic and aesthetic principles at their core. While these armchairs may seem less “Malmstenesque”, they already have the gentle curves that defined his later designs. This is especially visible in the flowing armrests that descend from the top, curling outwards to create a welcoming look. The gently bent backrests are tufted with dark yellow stitches that contrast with the light bouclé upholstery both in colour and texture to create a stylish, visually interesting look. The structures are supported by the tapered, solid pine legs that add an organic touch to the design. This chair model is reminiscent of the furnishings of the sitting room of Ulriksdal Palace, which was given to the crown prince and princess, Gustav and Louise, by the Swedish people in 1923. Malmsten was commissioned to create the decor for the room, and the Oscar armchair may have been a template for this period and perhaps that is why Carl Malmsten gave the chair a royal-sounding name.

The company known today as O.H. Sjögren was established as early as the 1870s. Carl Malmsten, who had hitherto only produced the most exclusive and unique furniture for a limited and affluent clientele, sought manufacturers who were able to produce his furniture in larger volumes without compromising the high demands he placed on craftsmanship and quality. He chose O.H. Sjögren, and together they developed and marketed the many items of upholstered furniture that have become classics today.

About the Designer:

Carl Malmsten (December 7, 1888 – August 13, 1972) was a Swedish furniture designer, architect, and educator. Malmsten was born in Stockholm, Sweden. Malmsten's career took off when he won a competition in 1916 to design furniture for the Stockholm City Hall and shortly after in 1917, he exhibited alongside well-known Swedish architects such as Gunnar Asplund and Uno Åhrén.

In the 1920s he was invited to furnish a room for the crown prince, Gustaf VI Adolf, and his wife Louise in Ulriksdal Palace. He was honoured with an inaugural Prince Eugen Medal for design in 1945. Already as a young designer in the early 20th century, Carl Malmsten advocated an artisanal furniture design based on local ingredients and traditions, available to a wide audience at a reasonable price.

Nature was Carl Malmsten's foremost teacher and source of inspiration. He conveyed his love of craftsmanship as a teacher in his own schools, at Olofskolan in Stockholm, Capellagården on Öland and the Carl Malmsten school on Lidingö, today a branch of Linköping University and one of the country's leading design colleges. As a debater, Malmsten stormed against functionalism, but in retrospect it can be seen that his ideas often coincided with the rational and frugal style ideals of function.

Malmsten has had a lasting influence on Swedish furniture design through the two schools he founded—the Carl Malmsten Furniture Studies (Carl Malmstensskolan), which has been a part of Linköping University since 2000, is situated on the island of Lidingö on the outskirts of Stockholm. Carl Malmsten spoke about the importance of tradition, craftsmanship and the nation. His furniture was in many ways a product of the thoughts and ideals of the time, they have a timeless quality that makes them just as relevant and loved today.

During the mid-twentieth century, European furniture makers increasingly combined the clarity of modernist design with traditional materials and time-honoured woodworking techniques. Designs often celebrated exposed joinery, solid timber construction, and woven fibres, creating furniture that was both visually light and durable. This pair of armchairs reflects that approach, pairing a geometric wooden frame with hand-woven wicker elements in a composition that is both architectural and inviting.

The chairs are constructed from solid wood elements, their rectilinear frames defined by broad square-section legs connected by robust stretchers that emphasize stability and craftsmanship. The armrests are flat, yet carved ergonomically, and they extend in a clean horizontal line, framing the seat. The distinctive backrests consist of solid triangular wooden panels with a blunted upper corner and a gently carved details, introducing a sculptural quality that contrasts with the openness of the surrounding frame. Below, hand-woven wicker panels form both the back support and seat, their tightly woven texture softening the angular construction and adding warmth to the composition. The interplay between smooth timber surfaces and the tactile weave creates visual depth, while the careful proportions prevent the substantial construction from feeling heavy. Every joint and transition is clearly expressed, allowing the quality of the materials and the precision of the craftsmanship to define the character of the chairs, from the woven panels to the leg stretchers.

The result is a pair of armchairs that balances architectural structure with natural texture. Their restrained detailing, honest construction, and thoughtful use of wood and wicker make them versatile seating pieces, equally suited to modern interiors and spaces that celebrate the enduring appeal of European mid-century craftsmanship.

This pair of armchairs is rooted in the European Art Deco movement. It was a period defined by confidence, structure, and a belief in modern luxury. Art Deco design emerged between the wars as a response to earlier ornament-heavy styles, favouring clarity of form, strong geometry, and refined materials. Furniture from this era often balanced comfort with a distinctly architectural presence, drawing inspiration from both classical proportion and the clean lines of modern industry. This chair reflects that mindset perfectly, presenting a strong and confident silhouette that feels intentional rather than decorative.

The form of the pair is solid and grounded, built within a strong wooden frame that gives the piece its architectural weight. The arms are outlined by smooth and sharply defined wood, creating a sense of enclosure that feels both protective and confident, while the backrests soften the geometry and add comfort. The rich beige colour of the upholstery highlights the chairs’ sophistication, and the minimal, carved legs in dark wood give the model a grounded feel that contrasts beautifully with the softness of the upholstery. The clean lines and geometric proportions balance the luxurious, soft texture of the fabric with the sturdiness of the frame, creating an object that is both sculptural and functional. This pair of armchairs exudes the confident yet refined impression typical of the Art Deco style.

Perfect for those looking to add some vintage glamour to a space, these pieces will bring timeless allure to any room. The design offers a perfect blend of style and comfort, which will endure through the ages while exemplifying Art Deco craftsmanship.

Swedish design is characterised by a minimal, clean approach that seeks to combine functionality with beauty. The mastery of Swedish designer and architect, Bertil Fridhagen lies in creating a model that is, as its name suggests, aristocratic and minimal at the same time.

This stunning pair of solid walnut armchairs combines elements of classical and modern design with utmost quality. The solid walnut beautifully frames the upholstered bodies, outlining the welcoming silhouette of the chairs. The frames have a stunning curvaceous design, that is visually appealing from all angles. The embracing body’s curve enhances the beautiful original chenille upholstery with small deep-stitched buttons. Swedish design prefers colours rooted in nature, muted tones that aren’t screaming about their presence, but still attract the eye naturally. The chairs’ yellow chenille upholstery is a wonderful example of this ideal. The cushions are removeable and reversible, adding to the comfort of the sitter.

Bröderna Andersson, the chairs’ manufacturer is first and foremost characterised by Swedish quality, Småland craftsmanship and professional pride. At Bröderna Andersson's, the entire production chain was under one roof. From the choice of wood species to the production of frames, and careful attention so that the last seam is in place, quality is Bröderna Andersson’s word of honour.

About the Designer:

Bertil August Julius Fridhagen was born on February 16 in1905 in Norra Sandsjö parish, Jönköping county, and was a renowned Swedish architect and furniture designer.

Bertil Fridhagen grew up in Bodafors. His father was a carpenter and he also started as a carpenter at AB Svenska Möbelfabrikerna in Bodafors, where he became the student of the architect Carl Erik Ekholm. Later, he decided to further his education at Konstfack in Stockholm. In a reversed way, Fridhagen started out gaining experience in cabinetry before completing his formal education in architecture.

He returned to Bodafors in 1937, where at first, he was employed at Sandsjö Möbelfabrik (1937-39) and then became chief architect at Svenska Möbelfabrikerna in Bodafors, where he succeeded his teacher, Ekholm. He became an important figure for the success of Svenska Möbelfabrikerna and in 1964 Bertil Fridhagen's models accounted for two thirds of home furniture production, which was an extreme success. For comparison, the much more well-known designer, Carl Malmsten's models accounted for a quarter. Bertil Fridhagen's biggest sales success was the combination series “Variett”.

Fridhagen won numerous prizes at various design competitions, including in Denmark in 1954, the California State Fair in Sacramento with the Librettserien in 1956, in Italy in 1966, 1968 and 1970 and in Tennessee in 1972. He also designed buildings, but above all interiors, he is remembered for the Bodafors church. The designer is remembered for his versatile models which are beautiful examples of Swedish design ideals. ~H.

During its heyday, Art Deco represented luxury, glamour, exuberance and faith in social and technological progress. The movement peaked in popularity around the 1930s, spreading across Europe and the United States up to the start of World War II. Art Deco designs featured rare, expensive, innovative materials and exquisite craftsmanship.

In line with the Art Deco movement during which they were created, these chairs illustrate the bold, rich and luxurious aesthetic of the era. Before giving way to mid-century modernism and its focus on function over form, Art Deco pieces coupled geometry and craftsmanship to arrive at elegantly impressive additions to interiors. This pair of armchairs live up to their rich history through their strikingly geometric form. Both the backs and the armrests introduce clear angles and wooden elements with multiple edges. The chairs feature back and seat cushions, upholstered in a soft deep green fabric that draws in the eye, bringing a warmth and an earthy richness that pairs beautifully with the beech frames. The armrests are stripped down to their wooden structure, with a tapering element further highlighting the sculptural quality of the model. The short legs, with their carved ridges, balance out the voluptuous bodies, while flowing effortlessly as a continuation of the armrests to ensure the stability of the armchairs.

Created during an age of innovation - from materials, to shapes and techniques - these chairs showcase that the European furniture designers’ artistic approach was anchored in the Art Deco movement. Through their form and quality craftsmanship, this pair of armchairs makes for the perfect stylish touch of warmth and charm.

French mid-century seating frequently combined elements of regional craftsmanship with the cleaner lines associated with modernist furniture. Rush weaving, long used in traditional French chairs, remained present throughout the post-war period, particularly in pieces that favoured natural materials and visible construction over heavy upholstery. Rather than concealing how a chair was made, designs like this highlighted joinery, wood grain, and woven surfaces.

This pair of armchairs brings together that approach through a restrained oak frame and handwoven rush seats. The structure is built from slender uprights and gently tapering legs, giving the chairs a light visual presence despite their size and proportions. The tall backrests are composed of vertical slats that introduce rhythm to the silhouette while keeping the form open and airy. The armrests extend from the back before projecting forward in a clean horizontal line, reinforcing the architectural quality of the design. The woven rush seats introduce texture and warmth, contrasting with the smoother surfaces of the wood. The natural fibres soften the geometry of the frame while also emphasizing the craftsmanship involved in the construction.

Together, the chairs inspire a quiet elegance that comes from masterful craftsmanship. The combination of materials creates richness without excess, allowing the structure to remain the focal point. Their silhouettes feel grounded in traditional French furniture making, yet the simplicity of the lines ensures the qualities of mid-century modern design.

Art Deco seating from the first half of the 20th century moved toward softer and more streamlined forms, rather than relying on heavy ornament. Designers focused on curved silhouettes and volume, creating furniture that fulfilled functional roles. Low armchairs became especially popular in domestic interiors, where comfort and visual softness were balanced with the elegance of the period.

This pair of armchairs embodies that transition through rounded, enveloping bodies and restrained detailing. The broad curved armrests flow directly into the lower structures, creating unified silhouettes with little interruption between elements. Unlike more rigid geometric seating, the forms feel continuous yet strong, with the upholstery enveloping the frames to emphasize the smoothness of the contours. The sand-coloured fabric reinforces the shape, giving the chairs a warm and understated presence while allowing light to move gently across the curved surfaces. The backrests are slightly reclined and contribute to a relaxed posture, while the generously proportioned seats add to the sense of comfort. Small wooden feet remain mostly concealed beneath the bodies, subtly lifting the chairs from the floor without distracting from their compact volumes.

What makes this pair particularly appealing is the combination of visual weight and softness. The chairs feel grounded without looking rigid. They function less as architectural objects and more as carefully shaped upholstered forms, designed with attention to comfort that suits a range of interior styles.
